Nitze Scholars...

Mar 07, 2007 22:17

 Hey you guys,

I'm going to be a sophomore next semester and I've been given a chance to apply to the Nitze Scholars... Can anyone here tell me if it is worth it/fun/interesting or if it's a waste of time?

I don't really know that many people who are in it, so any feedback you guys can give me would really help.

Thanks

I was in it (class of '05 here). When I graduated, it was definitely on the up-and-up. The main thing you'll hear about is the trip abroad you'll get to do after your third semester in the program. That is definitely a HUGE plus - how often does someone pay for you to go abroad for 2 weeks? We got to have guided tours of various sites (my class studied ancient Rome, and went to Italy), and also got to explore on our own. So obviously the trip is a huge plus, as is the scholarship.

As far as what kind of weight it holds on a resume, that I can't speak to - I mean, most people who are in the program are already distinguishing themselves in other ways, plus it is not really a well-known program. However, I am sure it does not hurt!

Two things that I really liked about the program
-I liked that we didn't have to just fulfill all the gen-ed requirements put forth by the college. I like that in the program, you think about and justify why/how your classes are related to one another and how they contribute to a liberal arts education (I was a chem major; perhaps this is something people who are already in the liberal arts feel is less important)
-I liked the camraderie, and various extra opportunities given through the program - we got to go to DC for the day occasionally to check out museums/concerts/other cultural events paid for by the program.

Anyway, when I went through the programs, the main problems were that things weren't especially organized, and some of the classes felt a little BS-ey, but on the whole it was a great experience.
