Features vehicle must have:
Small(er)
Off road capable (and no, the explorer, escape, lexus, BMW x5, Rav4 and a host of others are actually capable of off road antics).
Air conditioning.
power stuff (windows locks that sort of thing).
Taller than most cars, I must have a view while driving other than the car
in front of mines' bumper.

And yes they aren't good off road.

Ooops. I should mention that the Jeep Liberty is actually trail rated.

Actually, that's one of the very ones I was going to recommend. I'm not sure how much I can help you, overall...the level of off-road competence you want (and I'm not entirely sure where your cutoff is) really limits your options.

Hmm. Given how successful Mitsubishi has been in the Paris-Dakar rally, you might also look at the Montero. For serious off-roading, some form of Toyota LandCruiser should be in the mix. Beyond that...unless you want to spring for a Mercedes G500 or a Hummer, I'm not sure what else is really out there. Your best bet might be to check out the specialty off-road magazines for reviews.
