All in a rush, he goes quiet. His hands have finished their work but he does not take them back.

Careful, he admonishes himself; careful, quiet, follow the grain of his tattoos with reverence, even in perfect darkness. It’s the least anyone could do. He spreads his palms open over Ayel’s ribs and sucks on his bottom lip to hold his patience

They don’t sleep. They hold each other together stubbornly, knowing the thousand different ways that they could be taken apart. Nero counts their bones collectively by touch, one at a time. Knuckles, vertebrae, plates of the skull. He does not follow a pattern. He will forget some, pass twice over others.

“It’s okay,” Ayel says into his shoulder, sending the chill skittering back again.

It occurs to him that, no matter what happens, they will outlive their bodies. That they know their own future.

“It’ll be okay,” Ayel says.

Nero imagines that it will.

OMFG.

You have no idea how hard I freaked out when I saw you filled this. Your Nero/Ayel is my personal canon.

Also: this fic! I may or may not have had a short freak out from how amazing this was. Nero's headspace is so perfect and so intangible. That Rura Penthe is such an ephemeral place is amazingly poigniant.

I'm torn, I can't decide if the lines about Tal Shiar or Nero being selfish about hoping Ayel isn't dead....oh I can't decide which is my favorite. Gah I love it all!
