Brain proclamations

Gotta love the mind when it is asleep, or just on the fringe of sleep... and how it wants to play with ideas that I've been pondering about a day or two ago, and then it spits out a "pronouncement" that I am supposed to take at full value, or so says my sleepy brain.

The thought on my mind is on early Tudor garments, specifically the sleeves that Kass (kass_rants) has been working on in her own blog for her reconstruction of Michael Sittow - Catherine of Aragon's outfit. She posted quite a bit of thoughts on it lately, like in this post and others, as she works out what might be going on.

My mind went to the issue I had with my simple Tudor kirtle short sleeve, when I put my arms up. Even it had lines showing across the top of my arm, which would have been worse had it been a large gown sleeve. And then I remember how my Tudor court gown sleeves, in past versions, always had difficulties in raising the arm, even with a small gusset underneath. It was the tug and strain felt at the upper arms/bicep and into the shoulder area. It is something that has nagged at me for years, since I made the first one long ago. I just had no idea then what to do about it.

So, after my mind was refreshed from a short nap this afternoon, my mind just proclaimed to my self that a version of the "grand assiette" sleeve had to be the solution, no ifs, ands or buts. Gads, I hate that because now it makes me want to do some fabric playing of my own to figure out if that is really true, and I really don't have time or other inclination to see what to make of it, since I have other projects that have priority at this point. So now it nags at me.

So, I guess I'll just keep watching Kass and see what she does with her project. And hopefully next summer after the April project is done, when I make another early Tudor kirtle, I can try and see what I can do with the grand assiette idea.

For future reference: Lamentation by Gerard David, 1515-23.
