Why does my little girl, who loves for us to read books to her, who goes to sleep with books in her bed, who will ruin her eyes trying to read the stories by nightlight... why does she destroy her own books?
She pulls them apart, page after page, peeling off the covers, peeling off the pages, so we can't read the books she asks us to read day after day. It doesn't matter the kind of book, hard toddler book or regular soft pages, she eventually destroys them.
As a bibliophile myself, who has a large library of my own, and who has loved books as far as I can remember... I can't understand this need to destroy the books that she loves to read.
Her butterflies book is now in shreds, the one I read to her yesterday, now the latest in her destruction of books. And I don't know if I should buy her any more books. I don't know what to do, and I tried to get an answer from her, and all she would do is just cover her mouth.
Edit: I have removed all of the books from her room. Most are mangled one way or another. Once I've calmed down a bit, I will attempt to repair them, or if they can't be repaired, she and I will toss the books into the big trash can so she can understand that damaged books like those are no longer readable. WHEN I get her new books, they will remain in our living room, where she can get them one at a time, and put them back when she is done with her storytime, but otherwise they remain out of her reach. And no storytime today. I am too upset.
