Bank bomb scare in my home town

Oct 01, 2008 19:12

Just one block away from where my Dad still lives. I finally recognized the area from tonight's news report on ABC30. But ABC 30 was saying it was at Tulare and College, when it really was more at Tulare and I Streets. My dad lives on H Street.

6:40 p.m.: Bomb squad technicians have determined that neither of two suspicious boxes left in downtown Dinuba pose any danger.

Dinuba police say the box left in the Bank of Sierra by a robber contained some sort of sand, and debris. The box in a nearby house has also been cleared, but there was no word of what it contained, if anything.

The bank employees have been released to go home and downtown streets are open to traffic. Police are still looking for the suspect.

5:50 p.m.: A bomb squad from the Tulare County Sheriff's Department is evaluating a box used in a bank robbery attempt in Dinuba this afternoon.

The shoe-box-sized box inside the Bank of the Sierra is one of two suspicious devices found by Dinuba police after the robbery attempt at 3:35 p.m.

A lone bandit entered the bank, at the corner of Tulare and I streets, demanded money and claimed to have a bomb in the box.

The man, described as a man wearing what was believed to be a fake beard, got away on foot. Seven or eight employees who were in the bank at the time of the robbery got out of the building safely. A police spokeswoman did not know if any money was taken.

A second box is in a home several houses north of the bank, according to police.

Police have cordoned off downtown Dinuba within a one-block radius of the bank and evacuated businesses adjacent to the bank.

Dinuba High School had approximately 400 students in after-school activities locked down on the campus for about 90 minutes as a precaution. Police said it was the school's decision to lock down the campus.

This video shows the side of the Fire station, which I know the police station is just next door (seen behind the reporter to her right shoulder). The Bank of the Sierra is a new building, but I do recognize the buildings across the way from the fire station on the news report on 30 (the don't have info up on their web site yet). One place not seen is the Fiesta Drive-in I used to work at, which is not seen in the videos, but is directly across the fire station at the corner of H & Tulare.

Gah, it gives me shivers, but thankfully, there was no bomb, and therefore, no one was in real danger.
