Well, I did my fifteen minutes of sewing to get me going... which basically amounted to pressing the pattern pieces so I can trace them off, and reading the instruction page.
I am working on my daughter's holiday dress, because I am tired of buying her a hot acetate dress that is pretty, but only gets worn once, maybe twice, and has her sweating like an oinker because it doesn't breathe. So this one will be in cotton velveteen from my stash, and will be sized so she can wear it more than one year with larger side seams, and long hems to let out.
I am using a commercial pattern because I suck at pattern sizing needs of my kids. I tried it with Cam and his smock just barely fit. There aren't a lot of patterns for toddler girls that had what I was going for... since it was either modern heirloom styles, fairy tales, loose smock princessy styles, or just plain fuggly. So, I found a pattern from
Butterick 3236 that had decent bones to the pattern. I will be able to use it for awhile, as it is sized from 2-5 in one package (so many only had one or two sizes included). I will be able to modify things should I want to make an Elizabethan or Tudor outfit in her future since it has a decent square neckline.
It is a good thing I read the directions, because it calls for... on View C (the one with the split front), a doubled side front panels (in the fashion fabric) over the underskirt layer all sewn at the waistline in two passes to the lined bodice. Riiiiiiiiiight. I wanted View C, but will be going with the one above it in View D with the shorter arm ruffles instead. No way am I going to stick my little girl in three layers of fashion fabric (front only) when she sweats heavy in just one layer. Not even my first Elizabethan gown had that, it just had a turnbacked front for about 12" inches (now I would line in a lightweight fabric with a partial turnback/facing).
I am hoping that the red velveteen I have will work for her skintone. But I forgot to check before her nap, and forgot to check her measurements, too, so it will have to wait till she gets up. That's alright, as I am going to take a nap now, since both Cam and I have a cold we are fighting, among other health issues.
