I actually have no idea what his style of decor is like. I just want less stuff cluttering up my counter space all the time, and to be able to walk through my garage, if not be able to put one car in there. Same for my sewing room, which tends to end up with a walk space while I am working on something, with everything I need/want/had to go through piled up because I don't make the time to put those things away.
Austere is not what I want, nor spartan. I want comfy, with place for the kids to play without stepping on all the little toys underfoot. And clean. And old habits of mine are hard to deal with, not to mention dealing with everyone else's old habits of dropping everything where I just cleaned.
He's one of the designers on one of those "you're a slob" shows. He encourages people to throw away, give away or garage-sale 90% of their belongings, and has no reverence for books or photographs. He tells people to scan their photos (including heirloom ones) into a computer and look at them there if they ever want to look at them. He tells people that they don't need books--they can go to a library for books
( ... )
But living in 1400 square feet and only being able to use 200 of it because of clutter is a bit over the top, don't you think? I mean, it's great to have stuff, but when it rules your life, that's beyond where I want to be.
There's something to be said for having nice stuff, and there's even something to be said for having lots of stuff, but when the lots of stuff doesn't let you be what you want to be, then... maybe... some has to go.
But there is something to be said for a sense of comfortable order; for a feeling of not being overwhelmed by your externals, but rather a mastery over them.
That's it! Exactly!! Thank you for understanding what I am sadly unable to state clearly, and saying it for me. :-)

For why, see my lj, out of respect for your space, I took my opinion to my lj.

However, most of what I've heard Peter Walsh say is asshattery. If you like his style of austere home decor, splendid. I don't.
