Tudor outfit photo and details

Well, I didn't get to head south for my Kingdom's 12th Night, but I did attend a 12th Night with my local ren-faire friends (see photos). My Henrician outfit (~ 1530s) is now mostly done, with a new sash and kirtle sleeves still left to go. I did get a couple of photos, but they didn't show the outfit off as well as I had hoped. I think it would have helped finding a better backdrop for me to stand in front of, as dark red on dark red with a table in the way just doesn't do much to show things off.

But here's a photo of me in my new outfit.

The gown is in deep scarlet gabardine wool (from denverfabrics.com), with silk changeable taffeta in deep crimson and black (eBay) lining the sleeves. I've guarded the unseen hem in black cotton velvet (eBay), and piped the neckline in black silk (eBay). The gown skirt lining is in flame (orange) linen (fabrics-store.com).

My kirtle is mostly yellow linen (fabrics-store.com) for the unseen parts, so I don't die in the hot summers here. I lined the kirtle pair of bodies front in hemp canvas (hemptraders.com), and the pair of bodies back in cotton drill (Joann). The kirtle is boned with plastic ties (Home Depot) and one metal bone I had on hand. The visible portions are covered in a changeable silk taffeta of yellow and dark carnation (deep pink) (renaissancefabrics.net). My disheveled partlet (I had just done some dancing) is in the wool, with white silk taffeta lining (eBay). The same white taffeta covers the top of my French hood, with a black taffeta (eBay) hood in back.

I am still fiddling with bits and pieces, including the fit of the gown over the kirtle, and the pleats in the back, which I do not like at all (cartridge pleats a la The Tudor Tailor directions). but I do like whole suit in general. I still need to make my kirtle sleeves in the cabbage from the kirtle fabric, but that will take a little time as I do some fabric folding to match the images (#1, #2).

I am noting the various sellers I purchased the fabrics from, to show just how much of this garment was made from fabrics carefully found on the Internet, and hence, the world, by my choices. The only part of the outfit that was bought locally was the threads (Quilter's Paradise), and the cotton drill used to line parts of the kirtle. The silk threads used for part of the outfit was bought online at silkthings.com, while the linen threads for the kirtle eyelets were bought from Hedgehog Handworks while I was at Costume College last year.

Sometime when the weather improves from fog or rain, I will get some better photos outside. I tried to get the outfit on my dress dummy, but it doesn't fit at all, since the breasts won't move. And I do have a little fabric left over of the wool and orange linen, which I may make a cute dress for Maurelle someday.

Now, it is off to bed (the earliest in days)
