I recently bought a book on Illuminated manuscripts, and within I found a few images that is helpful for Tudor costuming, including one image that shows the back view of two women wearing French hoods from the 1515-1520 time frame. Needless to say it is now scanned and
up on my web site.
If only I had seen these images before I started my Tudor costume, as another image,
The Three Graces (one of the Pageants for the Marriage of Mary Tudor to Louis XII of France, 1514), shows a variety of styles other than the usual Tudor style. However, they may be considered "iconic" and not actually reflecting historical garments. But I like them. I really like the striped purple and blue outfit on the right, although I am not sure what's really going on with the hood or the sleeves. I also like the puffy sleeves of the white gown, and the basque of the left red gown is very different, although I've seen something similar in Norris' Tudor book.
Some ideas to think about for perhaps something for the SCA. I will have to see if similar designs are around in France during this time frame, or perhaps Spain or Low Countries. Ah, more research... but later, when I have time again.
