Hey Browncoats in the Fresno area

Jun 19, 2006 22:30

I saw this in Friday's Fresno Bee that I was reading today (been too busy or out of it to read until now). Thought it worth passing along. I would normally just provide a link, but it requires you to sign up. Since I already am, here it is behind the cut.

The Fresno Browncoats will host a charity screening of Joss Whedon's film "Serenity" at 7 p.m. June 22. The movie will be shown at the UA Sierra Vista 6, 801 Santa Ana Ave., Clovis.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Equality Now. The organization is dedicated to stopping violence against women.

The local Browncoats are part of an international group of fans of Whedon's short-lived Fox network television series "Firefly." Only 15 episodes of the 2002 TV series were produced. Those shows became the basis of the 2005 feature film "Serenity."

Other charity screenings of "Serenity" will be held in 43 cities.

"We are donating the money to Equality Now because Joss' mother had a hand in founding it," says Kirsten Starkweather, a member of the Fresno Browncoats. "The reason we are doing the fundraiser at this time is that Joss's birthday is June 23."

Advance tickets cost $11. They can be purchased at www.fresnobrowncoats.com. Remaining tickets will be $15 at the door.

Those interested in joining the local group can find more information at the same Web site.
