I posted this for one friend as a reply, but I figured I may as well share it in my own blog.
Not a synopsis of the movie, but a reason why I liked Serenity so much better than Star Wars I,II & III combined!
The females in the show KICK ASS!!! They are attractive, one admittedly is horny, strong, smart, are not cookie cutter personas, and much more. Unlike Padme who whimpers, rolls over and dies for whatever reason, after being Queen of a planet, a strong fighter, and an leading senator. [I wanted to strangle Lucas for that.]
Joss' dialog is funny, witty, and clever, something Lucas cannot seem to grasp. The story is interesting, and grabs from the beginning. For the fans of the TV show, you get more info on the characters, and Whedon proves that the story matters as much as the special effects (which is also pretty intense and amazing).
Another thing I liked, the suspense, the not knowing what's going on at points until it comes together near the end. And while there are bad guys, really gruesome-looking bad guys, (who you hear more about than actually see, which is a good thing) and good guys, even the good guys aren't pure and white, shiny types, they have their own issues to grapple with. And the bad guy has levels of dimension to his own view of the world, and believes in something greater than himself.
If you aren't sure about seeing this film, then wait to rent the DVD or check it out during a matinee. If you want more of the storyline up front, you can rent or borrow the Firefly DVD and watch the first year of episodes, then decide if you want to see more.
And yes, I am a fan from the beginning of the Firefly shows. We knew that something from Joss Whedon would be damn good, after all we were Buffy and Angel fans, and a fan of Toy Story, which
Whedon along with three others wrote the screenplay. He knows how to write stories, interesting stories, and Serenity shows that strength.
Oh, and the SciFi channel was airing Firefly for awhile. I don't know if they still are, but I hope, really hope, that they pick up the series for us fans.
