A House Of Cards

We all saw for ourselves how spectacularly things fell apart when the MRT broke down. What was quite a minor incident ballooned into a national inquiry, all because no one considered that such mechanical breakdowns could happen in Singapore.

Within a matter of days, the glossy image of the MRT got dragged into the mud, and looks never to recover.

Part of their undoing is their refusal to admit to the problem and to remedy the situation. While this may have still been alright many years ago, it is much less acceptable with the free exchange of information on the Internet. Members of the public and affected commuters could relate their experiences on the hiccups and vent their frustration at the MRT's response.

So how much of Singapore is knit together by fragile cords, and how much is actually strong as we purport it to be? The usual opacity clouds one's ability to access the situation, but as long as we continue our mad rush to grow, leaving the support staff to try to keep up, a gap will always remain between what is projected, and it really is.

Looking at the various participants in the industries one is familiar with, one can't help but think that they are houses of cards, waiting for the gale to blow everything to the ground...
