Cruising Along or Pushing The Limits?

I have often wondered if there is anything wrong with not wanting to push one's limits. Yes, there would not be much challenge in life that way, but any unexpected occurrence can then be easily handled without causing a meltdown. It is quite like being a cautious investor, rather than being so aggressive that everything goes topsy-turvy the minute one investment goes awry.

I guess that it ultimately depends on the stability of life and also the magnitude of perturbations. A person can be a fantastic worker with high-intelligence, but work output may be sub-par if there is constant disturbance in the personal realm. So, would we want such a person to work in a challenging position? Is it then fair to then expect them do focus on work in the midst of a personal crisis?

I think that ultimately depends on how the person in question deals with ambition and need for security, and reconciles that with where the person is at. At the same time, is there a role for society to play? Do they have any right to exert pressure on the individual to choose a path that fits their ideology or thinking?
