The Point of Education

May 02, 2012 07:40

I've often wondered about education nowadays. Is it too much of a business that quality is no longer a key concern? Then again, is the point of education to train one to be able (competency), or is it just to help one to get by?

It is quite easy to say that the training to excel is only in the realm of the elite universities like the Ivy League, but where does it leave the majority of universities? Does it mean that the rest are involved in mere rubber-stamping? That said, one should also note that even the level of scholarship in the top universities have been compromised.

Has the inquiring mind been left out of education in the mere pursuit of grades and certificates? Perhaps it has happened the minute universities started making money from education.
