iPad 2

As anticipated, Apple announced the launch of the iPad 2. The new iPad comes with a dual-core A5 chip, which makes it about twice as fast as the original. Apple also souped up its graphics performance, and users can see up to a nine times performance gain in that category. The new machine also features front and back-facing cameras for uses like FaceTime real-time video conferencing. It is also 33% slimmer and some 90 grams lighter than the original. Storage memory has remained the same, as has the screen resolution in spite of previous rumours of a retina display.

With the original iPad prices falling by about S$200 in Singapore prior to the launch of the iPad 2, I wonder how many will be going out to buy themselves a new toy. Those intending to upgrade will be in a fix, since the price-drop means that they have to offer more substantial discounts on their used machines. May be we will see offers for secondhand iPads from about $300?

Anyway, the iPad 2 will be launched on 11 March in the United States, and another 26 countries on 25 March. Unfortunately, Singapore is not amongst the 26. The European countries, Australia and Japan are. So I guess those wanting this new offering will either have to go to the United States to buy one, pay a premium for parallel imports here, or wait till April or May for it to be available on our shores...
