When Fitness Gets Corrupted

I no longer ask myself why I go to the gym. Suffice to say that it has become part of my life and my schedule. I remember starting out more than twenty years ago, when commercial gyms were unheard of, and I was panicking over my impending entry into National Service.

Now, many years later, I see the young guys working out diligently in the gym. While it is great to see young guys take an interest in working out, there are also a few who have resorted to taking some form of steroids. It perturbs me, because I wonder if they really know the potential impact on their lives down the road.

I always say that steroids are like drugs. Once you get on them, its a long slippery slope. I know that some say that they will quit after one cycle, but it seldom ever happens. Once you get hooked on the extra power and muscle development from the steroids, it is not so easy to just drop it. Then, there are the impacts on the bones, the endocrine system and even the liver and heart.

I really find it worrisome, since none of these guys really need the steroids. None are competitive athletes, and they are around twenty, which means their testosterone levels should still be reasonably high. Yet, they have succumbed to the temptation. I am glad to hear that some others have been wise enough to stay away. One guy got his doctor to prescribe the "safe steroid", but was asked to sign an indemnity form. I wonder if he realizes that the doctor would not have asked for the indemnity form if it was truly safe. Sure, he has made amazing gains in the past few months, growing more than fifteen kilograms in muscle mass over about two months, but what is the cost? And what for?
