So on this story I'm working on, I have a fuzzy idea that I need to crystallize in order to make it real.
I've got a boy named Orville. He's 13. The story is his. But who is he really? I've gone round and round in my head and he still isn't quite real to me. He's living in a foster home. Mother and father are gone. Mom is dead. Dad missing. Dad had some kind of job that had him traveling a lot. I'm thinking Indian Jones and possibly making him an archaeologist. He's not in the story. Least not at the beginning, but he's been gone maybe 2 years and he didn't take his tools on his last trip. Mom went. There was an accident.
Orville's got issues with them being gone. Anger, sadness, unresolved grief that isn't all grief because he can't bring himself to let his dad go. But he's taking to using the tools. Kind of doing a sort of tagging around town with a hammer and chisel to both help him keep his dad alive and also to take his anger out on the tools and the old stone buildings around town.
Sounds like a lot, but none of this gets to the heart of the boy. I need more.
