After 3 physical therapy sessions, (which will have been RATHER expensive if my insurance decides not to cover them!!) I think she finally figured it out on the last session: iliotibial band. It's the leg stabilizer that hooks your hip to your femur to your tibia. Too tight. I've been stretching it, when I think of it and definitely before and during hikes. It had been doing better. I had even felt brave enough to buy some running shoes. I was able to run a mile with only a few mild reminders from the knee that it likes short strides. I had been hiking without problems YAAAAAAY! (hills, as in the only place nearby to hike, were killing me previously). And then, I pushed it. Two miles, with moderate complaints from the knees followed by a maybe 1.5 mile walk with the dogs. No good. Now, rather than one complaining knee, I have two. UGH.
I had really gotten used to the idea that I could hike pain free again. *sigh* back to taking it easy, but at least I've found I can do the elliptical without pain, and that's better than nothing. And at least I know what it is and what to do about it. sheesh.
Anyways, I have no idea why she (the physical therapist) took so long to figure it out. I went to the running shoe shop, was asked about injury in general, I said my knee & pointed to the outside of the knee and the guy was like "IT band: 1) don't run on uneven surfaces 2) stretch 3) think about using a track where you can stop anytime it starts feeling bad 4) rollers" INSTANT diagnosis and 4 things to do that would help. It's like the physical therapy people aren't even familiar with or trained to handle sports injuries. only people with hip replacements and serious mobility issues. GAH.
