Why must cameras be so damned expensive?

I called to cancel my order for a Nikon D40 and had found that the Nikon D40x is basically the same amount of money and came with a greater deal (a bunch of stuff including two top of the line lenses for $869) so I was going to switch to buy that instead. Since I figured this out on the weekend and they weren't open until the weekday, I did some browsing and found that if I just bought the Nikon D40x body and then the rest of the stuff from another company, it would be an entire $100 less. So that's what I planned to do.
I called Best Price Cameras this morning to cancel and just to be sure about the D40x before ordering, I asked them if they had that in stock. They don't. At this point in time, we're not sure if they actually sell anything.

So now I have around $840 with nothing to spend it on because at this point in time I just really want the camera for the concert and stuff. My mom wants me to go check on Fry's but I seriously doubt they're going to have any sort of great deal that will leave me with enough money left over to buy a better lens, memory card, card reader, and possibly a flash. Hopefully I'll figure something out.
