Hey all,
Seriously, yesterday was the best Friday I've had in forever. Started off with a Physics exam. Not a good start, surely? Fuck man, I blitzed it, knew everything. Guaranteed A, methinks.
Left Sixth Form at like, twenty to one or something. Got back home and learned Narcissist by The Libertines, so that was funky. Chilled at home, played Call of Duty and jamming on my guitar for a few hours. Had a nap (oh hell yeha, it's so manly). Got changed and washed for the night ahead, for I had tickets to see the legendary Babyshambles, with lead singer Pete Doherty and the less talked about, but equally amazing, Drew and Adam, at a venue with less than 200 capacity :O
Got a lift to Stoke with Tom's parents. Tom's Dad HAS to be a spy, I'm convinced of it, to the point that I'm now convinced that Pete Doherty is also a spy and they had an altercation at some point in the past, leaving Tom's dad without hair and Pete Doherty without a chin. Anywho. Got there a bit early so we searched for a pub to get a couple of pints before the show...but they wouldn't let Tom in anywhere because he looks about 12 XD I however, am clearly 18 >.<
Returned to the venue and queued up for about 30 minutes and started going in. Spoke to the bouncer briefly, who confirmed that Doherty was in town. YAY! Then this guy comes around with wristbands, puts one on my brother, one on me then stops at Tom...
"how old are you?"
"18"
"I don't think so, you got ID?"
By this time, Tom is beginning to freak, thinking he can't get in.
"what, no! I've come all the way from Cannock ma..."
"no no, just means you can't drink"
"oh, that's cool"
His panic was hilarious. We got in and chilled out, watched the first support band, who were alright actually. A little samey, but should be decent in a few years. As the anticipation was building, the DJ put on "Kilimangiro", so we all thought he was on stage and started singing, but not so. EVentually they come on and Pete walks to the mic (as he didn't show last week) and said:
"So, did you all kick off last week?"
*huge cheer*
"gooood gooood"
So he got into his set. Technically, he wasn't amazing, because Pete found playing guitar and singing hard (their guitarist had recently left), but he pulled it off and the whole show shambled on. On one song though, it took him about 2 minutes to remember the chords. It was hilarious. To the point where he's like:
"Ok, so who can play the A'Rebour solo better than me?"
It was wicked though, they played:
La Belle Et Le Bete
A'Rebours
Fuck Forever
Horror Show
What Katie Did
Albion
Kilimangiro
Pipedown
In Love With a Feeling
Stix and Stones
32nd of December
Loyalty Song
Three new songs too.
It was amazing, one of the best gigs I've been to. It was a shambolic performance, but somehow it all worked. I think Drew and Adam carried it alot, but Pete's stage presence was amazing. He was funny and chatty with the audience. One point:
"So, can I do that thing where I jump into the crowd, still playing my guitar and you all hold me up?"
*cheers*
"ah right, I see, better empty my pockets, I know the legendary quick fingers of Stoke"
Awesome night.
Just to top it off, my pre-ordered album arrived this morning. It's not released till Monday, but I'm the proud owner of "Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not".
What a top weekend, already.
Nickeh.
