day 17 - a movie that disappointed you the most

Easy one.

The Graduate

I'm baffled by its placement on the AFI Top 100 list. Better than On the Waterfront? High Noon? All About Eve?? Wrong wrong wrong. Unlike Anne Bancroft, this movie did not age well.

Honorable mentions go to...

Citizen Kane, which is a great film, but didn't live up to the hype for me. Still, from a filmmaking standpoint, I can appreciate why it gets the accolades that it does. It probably meant a lot more, too, to people familiar with Hearst and his empire.

Withnail and I, which was recommended by a friend who said it was his favorite film. I also saw it on a list of movies in EW that folks said they loved so much that they envied people viewing it for the first time. I love Richard E. Grant so with all that behind it, I thought it could be great. For me, it was not. I could pick out the parts that lovers of the film would probably cite as uproariously funny, but... meh. I mostly found the characters to be pathetic.

Raising Arizona. I generally like the Coen brothers a lot, but found their efforts here to be massively disappointing.
