This was a tough one. I enjoy great characters, but I don't watch movies this way anymore, not like when I was a teenager and related to Lucy Honeychurch in A Room with a View and daydreamed of discovering those passions unexplored. All I needed was a trip to Italy and a brief escape from my chaperone to wander in a field of barley and be swept up in the arms a handsome man...
Nope. There are certainly elements of characters or their situations that resonate with me, but it's not often anymore that I think, "That character is so much like me" or "I want to be like that character."
The closest that I can come up with for my film watching in recent years is:
Dr. Ellie Arroway in Contact
I loved this film and couldn't stop thinking about it after we saw it in the theater back in the day. Ellie is forced to reconcile science, religion, faith, and personal experience. As a scientist that was questioning the steadfast atheism of her teenage years, the character's journey meant a lot to me.
Small moves, Ellie...
