Wow. Amazon to sell fanfiction ...

WOW. Just read this press release from Amazon. They have established Kindle Worlds, where they will be selling fanfic for certain television fandoms, including Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and Vampire Diaries, with more coming soon.

*blinks*

Yes, they have received permission to do this. Amazon will be paying royalties to both the rights holder of the "World" and the fanfic author.

My mind is whirling with the possible effects this could have on those fandoms, not to mention other fandoms whose members may retrofit their stories to fit in with one of these in order to make some cash for their fanfic.

35% royalties for fanfic.

Whoa. This could be a game-changer.

ETA: Well, maybe not. Apparently if the rights holder thinks something in a story is good enough, they can include it in an episode and the author will get nothing. They can change anything they like. Basically, once the author uploads it, they have no more rights over their story. They get the 35% royalties, yes, but that's it. Also, when you look at the rules/regulations they're implementing, I can't imagine they'll see the traffic they're hoping for. No smut allowed. Hmm ...

Add that to concerns about people stealing people's stuff and uploading it as their own, and I have to wonder if Amazon realizes the trouble they've just bought. I foresee lots o' wank in the future! *begins popping the popcorn now*
