The next few days passed in a cloud of depression for Elijah. The young man stayed in bed, just staring at the wall, barely acknowledging Dominic as he forced him to eat something, insisting that he had to keep up his strength. For the baby if not for himself. Dominic was beside himself with worry. Elijah had been like this since his mother’s tirade and hadn’t been out of bed since. He had no idea what to do to snap him out of it. It just made him beyond angry at Debbie, to harm her son in such a way. A baby should bring joy and happiness. Not tears and depression. No matter what Lij was reluctant to announce his pregnancy….

Carrying a tray containing cereal and milk into the dark room, Dominic frowned. He had hoped that with it being such a pretty day out, and the day of the ultrasound…Dominic’s first, that Elijah would find it within himself to force himself out of the depressive state he’d been in. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. He was still in bed, hidden under a tangle of blankets and sheets, staring sadly at the wall. It was like all the happy days they had spent together had ceased to exist.

Taking a deep breath, Dominic decided that enough was enough. This was by no means good for the baby. It wasn’t good for Elijah either. Besides, they had a doctor’s appointment that Dominic did not want to miss. Not when it meant actually seeing his baby’s sonogram for the first time.

“Elijah…baby, enough time has passed. I know you’re upset about your mum. So am I, but you can’t let it get to you like this. Staying in bed…hiding from the world…it’s not good for you or the baby. Please. Come out of this room today. Rejoin us,” Dominic pleaded, sitting on the edge of the bed, gently touching Elijah’s hair. “Besides, today is another sonogram…my first one. Remember? Please baby…”

“She hates me,” Elijah sighed, tears in his voice, that just broke Dominic’s heart. He wondered how Debbie Wood could live with herself, causing her son pain like this? It’s not something he could see himself, nor Elijah doing to their son or daughter. Even if they found themselves in a strange situation.

“I’m sure that’s not true, Lij. She’s your mother. There’s no way she can hate you. She’s just…freaked out right now. It’s not every day that a man gets pregnant…and that it’s her own son…she has got to be thrown off her rocker…”

Elijah just shrugged, not bothering with an answer. He knew that Dominic was trying to comfort him. Cheer him up so he would get out of bed. But there was no way Dominic could know his mother. Once she cut you off, that was it. It didn’t matter if she does found out that she was wrong or overreacting. He could probably consider himself motherless now. “You don’t know her, Dom. She’ll cut me…us…out of her life now. There’s no turning back when she’s like this…,” Elijah placed a hand on his belly, stroking it in a soothing motion.

Dominic sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed, placing a gentle hand on the hand Elijah had over his belly. “Well then it’s just as well. I mean…do you want someone like that in our child’s life, Lij? Someone so judgemental and full of hate? If she can’t bring herself to be a part of your life…and our child’s life…well then I rather she be gone. It’s for the best…don’t you think? For our child at least?”

Elijah sighed. Dominic was right. It was for the best that his mother was out of his life if she couldn’t accept his child…but that didn’t make the hurt go away. Still, he had to try to come back to himself…for the baby’s sake as well as Dom’s. He had already missed the first sonogram…he didn’t want to make Dom miss this one…
“Yeah. It is…”

“Come on Lij. Your appointment is in an hour…we have to get going…”

Elijah frowned and forced himself to sit up, still feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders. His mother hated him. Of that he was positive. Soon everyone would know of his pregnancy. Another certainty. He was going to have to prepare himself for the media…and he had more decisions to make where the baby was concerned, but this time at least he’d have Dominic by his side. He should be ok as long as that didn’t change.

Smiling encouragingly, Dominic helped his boyfriend to his feet and led him to where he had laid out his clothes for the day. A sweat suit…a black one that kept his burgeoning body hidden from the world. Soon that was going to change. Soon nothing would hide his pregnant belly.

“Black. Just like you said…,” Dominic smiled, hoping to make Elijah smile some.

“Not that it’ll help for long. Soon nothing will hide this belly,” Elijah sighed, resting hjs hand on the growing bump…more like a balloon protruding from his torso. The bigger he got, the more awkward he felt, to be honest. The more he didn’t want to go out. Put that with the devastation he felt from his mother, it wasn’t a good combination.

“Hey, it’s not that bad. All pregnant people get big…and they’re beautiful,” Dom placed his hand over Elijah’s, a gentle smile curving his lips. He didn’t want to tell Elijah, but he couldn’t wait until he was even bigger and the proof of their baby was there for all to see. He just couldn’t help be proud of the fact that their family was underway. He may be late to the game, but that wasn’t going to stop him from looking forward to their new arrival, or from loving every inch of his lover’s growing body.

“But not all those people are pregnant men. Make that famous pregnant men. The media is going to have a fucking field day…”

“Fuck the media,” Dominic sighed, stepping in front of his lover, keeping his hand in place over Elijah’s. “For one, you’re hardly in the spotlight. I doubt that they’ll notice. Two, it’s none of their business. Three, we can still keep this under wraps. It’s not like we’re in Hawaii and the paps follow us around everywhere because we are on this new hot show or anything…”

Elijah had to laugh at the last part of that, then his laughter faded. “But I am famous enough. Enough to take notice when it’s announced that I’m a pregnant man…and not only that…but the pregnant man is Frodo…and the father is Lost’s own Charlie Pace…”

“Oh Elijah…”

Elijah sighed. He was tired. Tired of all this thinking he was doing about the consequences of his pregnancy…of how his life would change even more, and not in the normal you have a little person in your life way. In the you’re a freak of nature that the media will cover to the end of time way. He wanted to be like Dom. Enjoy this. Look forward to their growing family. But how could he when his life seemed to be coming apart. Sure he had Dominic back in his life, which was good. The best thing to come from all of this. But his mother had basically kicked him out of her life and who knew who would turn their backs against him next.
“Can we not talk anymore about this for now? We really should get to the doctors…”

“Of course,” Dominic nodded, stepping back so Elijah could dress. “Just stop worrying so much, love. It can’t be good for the baby…”

“You’re right,” Elijah nodded slipping on the sweat suit. “I’ll…I’ll try to do better. No more moping in bed…I promise…”

“Hey, don’t do that. If you feel like taking a moment to let things sink in, do so…but don’t let it take you over, Lijah. Sure, your mother is a bint for doing this to you, but you have more people in your life that are standing behind you and love you no matter what. Me, Bills, Hannah and Zach. Viggo, Orli, fuck even Astin. Especially Astin…,” Dominic chuckled. “With all the love you have surrounding you, one woman’s hatefulness should barely glaze you.”

Elijah chuckled, Dominic’s words sinking in. He was right. His mother wasn’t the be all and end all of everything. He had people in his life that accepted him and his baby and loved them no matter what. That didn’t let some institution tell them that it was wrong to love him and his baby. That they were abominations. He was sad that the woman that gave him life would not be a part of his baby’s life…but that was the way it had to be by her own choice. There was nothing he could do about it. His baby had a family ready to love it, despite it all. That was what mattered. Looking at Dominic, with tears in his eyes, Elijah wrapped his arms around him in a tight hug.
“Thank you for pointing that out…you’re right…you’re always right…”

“Of course I am,” Dominic chuckled, hugging his lover back. “And don’t you worry about hiding your baby belly. It’s a beautiful baby belly and you’re even more beautiful for having it. Anyone that says differently is lying.”

“We better go before we’re late and have to make another appointment,” Elijah blushed, forcing himself to step away.

“Yeah. I’ve waited long enough to view a sonogram as it happens. I don’t want to wait any longer,” Dominic chuckled, leaving the room to collect his car keys. Elijah watched him go with a sigh. His mother may indeed be out of his life, just like his father. But one good thing was that he and his baby would always have Dominic. That was one person he’d always be able to count on. No matter what.

Elijah had to hold back his laughter as he watched Dom intently watch the dark sonogram screen. They hadn’t been there for long and the doctor had gone to find the gel to prep Elijah for the procedure, yet Dominic was staring at the screen as if the picture of the baby was already there.

“Sweetie, she hasn’t even prepped me yet. You’re staring at a blank screen,” a giggle escaped. Elijah’s dark mood from that morning was beginning to clear thanks to Dominic’s anticipation at seeing their child for the first time.

“Oh…right…,” Dominic blushed, forcing himself to look away from the screen at his lover. Concern suddenly clouded his eyes as he realized that Elijah didn’t look too comfortable there in his hospital gown waiting for the doctor to return. “Are you comfortable? You’re not too cold are you? Maybe I should get a nurse to get a blanket and some pillows. Least they can do since we have to wait…is the baby ok…?”

Elijah laughed this time, beyond amused. “Honey, I’m fine. As comfortable and warm as I can be. The baby is fine too. He or she is just excited about revealing him or herself to his or her other daddy. Just relax, alright? You’ll get so uptight, that you can’t enjoy this.” Elijah took Dom’s hand in his and gave it a squeeze.

“I just want to be sure that you’re alright…”

“I’m fine. Just relax,” Elijah smiled, just as the doctor came in.

“Good morning Mr. Wood and…Charlie Pace?” The doctor arched a brow.

Dominic laughed. He was wondering if anyone in the hospital would recognize him. “Just call me Mr. Monaghan, or Dom….”

The doctor blushed. Working in Cedars Sinai, she had seen celebrities come and go and still she got star struck. This time was no different. And of course, it made sense for him to be there. Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Wood were the best of friends. “Oh of course…are you two gentlemen ready to see the baby?”

“We sure are,” Elijah grinned, squeezing Dominic’s hand, loving how his eyes never left the screen, even though there was no picture there yet.

“Ok…let me prep you and then we’ll get started,” The doctor smiled, squirting a tube of gel onto her hand and rubbing it onto Elijah’s huge belly. “We’re using a special kind of sonogram this time. This one is more defined. You can see more of the baby’s features…”

Elijah’s eyes widened, getting what she was talking about. He had heard of these sonograms where you could actually see every detail of the baby. He was so happy that she was going to use it and just in time for Dom to be there as well! “That’s fucking awesome! Isn’t that fucking awesome, Dom?!”

“It sure is…” Dominic’s face lit up even more and Elijah could swear that he looked even more closely at the dark screen. Elijah could only laugh.

“Stand back, Dom. I want to see too,” Elijah giggled.

“Oh…uh…sorry,” Dominic stepped back, looking chagrined, causing Elijah to once again laugh.

The tech just chuckled and turned the machine on. Two awe filled gasps filled the room as a tiny human form filled the screen.

“Oh my god…,” Dom gasped, his hold on Elijah’s hand tightening. “It’s…it’s our baby, Lijah. Right there…”

“I know,” Elijah smiled, his eyes going from the sonogram to Dominic, who now had tears in his eyes. He frowned, confused. He thought Dominic would be happy to see their child like this. Why was he crying? “Dom…? Why are you crying?”

“Because I’m so happy and it’s so beautiful…it’s me and you in there…”

“Oh Dom…”

“Would you like to hear the heart beat?” The doctor asked, too absorbed in her work to pay attention to what the two men had just said to one another. “I can also tell you the sex of the baby as well, if you want to know.”

Dom and Elijah looked at each other just then. To know the sex of the baby…should they? Looking into each other’s eyes, they simultaneously made a decision. Some things were best left a mystery.

“What do you think, baby?” Dominic asked, rubbing Elijah’s hand with his other one.

“It can wait…” was Elijah’s quiet answer.

They both looked at the doctor, but it was Dominic that spoke. “Yes to the heart beat, no to the sex.”

The technician just nodded and set the settings for the heartbeat. Dominic gasped as the fast paced rhythm of the baby’s heart filled the room. “Oh my god…”

“Awesome, isn’t it?” Elijah chuckled.

“Bloody awesome…”

That night, Elijah lay on his back, his shirt pushed up, revealing his huge belly reading another pregnancy book when Dominic entered and lay his head on Elijah’s exposed belly. Elijah couldn’t help but giggle.

“Am I your pillow now?”

“Nah, just listening to our child…”

Elijah laughed again. Dominic was so cute. He placed a hand on Dominic’s head and played with his hair. “I don’t think you can hear anything without the machine, honey…”

Dominic just smiled and moved his head onto Elijah’s chest, right where his heart was beating. “Maybe not there…but here I can…the sound of your heart…”

“It beats for you, you know. Both of you.”

“And mine beats for you,” Dominic sighed. He sat up and looked into Elijah’s eyes, his emotions overcoming him. The past months had been hell, but now…the present and the future with Elijah…it looked to be heaven and he was beyond grateful. “Thank you. Thank you for giving me this. Our family…”

Tears leaked from Elijah’s eyes. How much he loved this man? He could never say. It was far too much. One couldn’t even measure it. His mother, yeah. She had kicked him out of her life , but Dominic and their baby made a family that he had always dreamed of and wanted. A family that was made of truth, love, and emotion. One that he loved more than anything. Kissing the top of Dom’s head, as they held onto one another, Elijah promised himself to never do anything to endanger their family again. That meant always telling the truth, no matter what and never give Dom up. No matter what anyone had to say. It was them against the world. The way it always should be…
