Chapter 6

Sean pulled the car into his driveway, his mind stuck on Elijah and his situation. To be honest, he still couldn’t believe it, despite witnessing the small miracle today. He had read all about male pregnancy of course…but never in a million years did he think that one of his friends could be one of the few men able to conceive and carry a child…never did he imagine that it’d be Elijah! The youngest member of their group! It was all so…strange. Yet, here he was. Helping his young friend find some peace in his time of need. Keeping away nosey paps, well meaning friends and…all thoughts left him as he looked towards his porch to see the person Elijah needed most sitting on his front steps, waiting for him. Dominic. The one person he’d have to protect Elijah from, despite him being the person Elijah needed most. Sean couldn’t help the sudden burst of anger. Fuck, all of this was Dominic’s fault. If only he hadn’t let himself get drunk. If only he hadn’t invited Elijah to Hawaii at all. If only…well, there were a lot of if onlys. Too many. Now it was all about what to do. Either tell Dom where to find Elijah, or deny him access. It was a decision that Sean wished he didn’t have to make. Something else he could blame Dom for. His unwise decision was putting Sean in a tough spot.

Dominic stood up as Sean parked the car and got out, all emotion gone from his face. Looking at the Brit, he had come to a decision on what to do. Elijah was in a delicate condition. He needed rest. Peace and quiet. Dominic was nothing but chaos and restlessness. He was going to do what was best for his pregnant friend. That was the only thing he could do really.

“Dominic. Back already?” Sean forced himself to remain neutral. He tried not to allow his face to betray the turmoil he felt inside. This was going to take all of his strength and will power.

Dominic took a deep breath, not knowing how this was going to end. He still remembered the last time Sean had lectured him about Elijah. It was just after they had gotten back from New Zealand and Sean had found out that he was staying with the younger actor. …

“He’s still a kid, Dominic. This is all new to him. Fun and games. But someday he’ll grow up and he’ll want what every man wants. A family. A family that you won’t be able to give him….moving in with him is not the best thing…”

“He’s not a baby Astin. We know what we’re doing. Besides, we’re more than lovers. We’re mates. “

“So if he finds that he doesn’t love you after all, you’ll be able to let him go.”

“Of course. If that’s what he wants.”
And he did let Elijah go. When Elijah began worrying about the attention towards his private life and the fact that Dom was living with him and they were so close, Dom had let Elijah call it off and he had moved in with Sean’s brother Mac. That had been that. They had been just friends from that moment on and Dom had put it behind him…or at least he thought he had. The fact that he was here, on Sean’s doorstep, looking for Elijah so he could beg for another chance was proof that he hadn’t. Not at all. But why not get back together? They were both a lot older than they were back then. Wiser. Able to handle the pressure more…so why keep lying to themselves and pretend that there was only friendship when they both knew the truth. Their hearts belonged to each other. The fact that they slept together that hot night in Hawaii was proof of that. Say what you want about Elijah, but he wasn’t the sleeping around type.

“Yeah. All the promoting is done and over with. I’m an out of work actor again,” he scratched the back of his neck, not really knowing how to approach the subject of Elijah.

“It is too bad though. You were great on that show,” Sean nervously smiled, all too aware of the ultrasound picture in his pocket of Dom’s baby. “So…what’s up? Did you come for a social visit?”

“Not exactly…I…I came by to see if you know where Elijah went off to. Hannah said if anyone knew where he was, it’d be you.”

Fuck. Sean couldn’t help but curse Hannah for her big mouth. He wasn’t ready for this confrontation. He had no idea what he was going to say or do…he just knew that he had to keep Dom away from Elijah somehow. “Why? I mean…why do you need to see Elijah?”

“We have some issues to talk through…some things happened during his last visit to Hawaii and…well I just need to talk to him….”

Alarm bells began to ring. Why would Dominic want to talk to Elijah about that god forsaken night? It had destroyed Elijah’s future, placing him with a baby that he hadn’t planned for. And now here Dominic was wanting to talk to him? Why? What would be the purpose unless….oh fuck…no no no. Did Dominic want Elijah back? Did he want them to be lovers again? Stay out of this Astin. This is between Dom and Elijah. It does not concern you. Stay out of it. But he couldn’t! He was right in the middle of it, guarding the path to Elijah against Dom, against his will…oh fuck, what was he going to do? Maybe he should just tell Dom. The man deserved to know that he had a baby on the way and Elijah needed the father of his child around…but Elijah had sworn him to secrecy. Forced him to promise to never ever tell Dom about him and the baby…he couldn’t go back on that. No matter what damage sending Dom away would cause…

“I…I’m sorry Dom. I don’t know where Elijah is. He didn’t leave me a forwarding address. I’m sorry…” Sean looked away, not able to look Dom in the eye. He hated lying, he really did. Dom, why couldn’t you have just stayed sober? Why did you have to sleep with him? Why are you here looking for him now? Just leave him alone. That’s what he wants.

“I have to talk to him Sean. It’s important. Hannah said he’s avoiding everyone but you, and if you know where he is…”

“I told you I don’t.”

“But if you do,” Dom continued, not believing Sean for a minute. The way he wasn’t looking at him was a dead give away. Sean Astin sucked at lying. He could never pull it off effectively and just by the way he was acting, Dom knew that Sean was being less than truthful. “you have to tell me. It’s important…”

“Important? How can whatever you have to say be important to Elijah, Dom? Whatever it is you have to say, can’t it wait until he returns? What can be so important that you need to see him now?”

Our relationship. Our love for one another That’s what’s so important Astin. I’d tell you that, but you wouldn’t understand how I can still be crazy about Elijah after all these years. So just tell me where he is. That was what Dom wanted to say to Astin…no that’s what he wanted to yell, but he didn’t. Yelling at Astin wouldn’t get him to Elijah any quicker. It’d just get in the way. To be honest, he didn’t know what would work with Astin. How he could get the older man to help him. Maybe there was nothing he could say. Just hope for the best. “It’s private. Look, just tell me where he is and I’ll be out of your hair…”

Astin sighed, wishing that the whole situation would go away. How he hated this. Lying to one of his friends, doing what they had suspected him of doing way back in New Zealand. Only thing is…this wasn’t his idea. Elijah was putting him in a place that he did not want to be. Maybe he should just say the fuck with it and tell Dom where he could find Elijah. Let them work it out themselves. But Elijah had been so sick and fragile and the doctor said for him to avoid stress…and seeing Dom…it would be nothing but stressful. It could cause Elijah to weaken even more. It could cost him the baby. No. He could not allow that to happen. He just couldn’t betray his friend. Whatever they had to work out, they could work it out after the baby was here and safe and healthy…
“I’m sorry, Dom. I don’t know where he is. I’m sure he’ll be back in a few months, if you’ll just be patient and wait.”

Dom sighed, pushing back the urge to shake Sean until he told him the truth. Fuck, what was with him? Why was he being such a bastard? He couldn’t be that determined to keep him and Elijah apart, could he? Sure Dom had his suspicions back in New Zealand, but that was only because Sean was so worried about what news of a gay romance would do to the movies. But LOTR was long over now. There was no reason for him to be stonewalling him like this. He was being nice and calm. All he wanted was the truth.
“Sean, look. I know you’re lying, ok. You know where Elijah is. Why won’t you just tell me?”

“Dom…”

“No. No more of your excuses, mate. I can see right through them. Just tell me where Elijah is.”

“I can’t…”

“Sean…I’m here begging you. What more do you want?”

“To leave it be. That’s what. Look, I don’t know why you want to see him so badly. I’d tell you if I had my way…but I…I just can’t. I promised. I’m sorry Dom. I hate being in the middle of this, just like you do…but…he’s my best friend and he comes first. He doesn’t want to see you. Just let it go,” Sean sighed, his shoulders slumped in defeat, yet he felt relieved that some of the truth was coming out, even though it wasn’t the most important truth…that truth was Elijah’s to tell. Not his own…

Elijah doesn’t want to see him? What the fuck? Why? What had he done that was so horrible that Elijah would just cut him out of his life like this? Maybe Sean was lying. Maybe he sensed why Dom wanted tot talk to Elijah and was stonewalling to keep that from happening, worrying about Elijah’s career as usual…but looking at him, Dom knew that Sean knew nothing of his reasons and what he said was the truth. Elijah didn’t want to see him. Well…fuck…
“Why is he doing this?”

Sean frowned, feeling for the Brit on his steps. If there was anyone in the fellowship who adored Elijah more than he did, it was Dom. There was nothing Dom wouldn’t do for the youngest member of their merry group. Even when they broke up, all Elijah had to do was look as if he needed help, and Dom was right there. To be cut off like this….it was probably destroying him.
“I’m sorry Dom. I truly am. Just…give him some time and space, yeah? Let him come to you…”

“Sean…,” Dom sighed, defeated. Sean was digging in his heels. He wasn’t going to tell him anything. Especially since Elijah was the one that told him not to. “I’m not going to hurt him. I never will…”

Guilty, Sean took out the ultrasound picture and looked at it. Elijah’s baby…Dom’s baby….something he knew Dom always wanted and he couldn’t even tell him. He couldn’t tell Elijah’s secret. He couldn’t give Dom Elijah’s location…but there was one thing he could give Dom…even though it wouldn’t make keeping the secret right. It wouldn’t suddenly make Dom in the know about anything. It’d probably just be a mystery to him…
“I know, Dom. I’m sorry…if Elijah hadn’t…I just can’t help you. ..”

“You probably wouldn’t, even if your orders hadn’t come from Lij,” Dom looked away. He told himself not to blame Sean. The bloke was just being loyal to Lijah…but a part of him just couldn’t help it. Sean was standing in the way of him getting Elijah back and that was something he just couldn’t get over at the moment.

Guilty, Sean walked up to Dom and patted him on the shoulder with one hand and slipped the ultrasound picture into Dom’s pocket with the other. It wasn’t Elijah’s location…but it was all he could do for his angry friend. “He’ll be back Dom. He’ll talk to you then…”

“Sure. Whatever you say….,” Dom sighed, unaware of the paper Sean had slipped into his pocket. He had to face the facts. There will be no talking to Elijah tonight and he was going to get no help from Sean…at least not right now. The best thing he could do was just go home and get some sleep and think of what he was going to do tomorrow, because he may be admitting defeat tonight, but this was far from over. He will find Elijah and he will get him back. With or without Sean Astin’s help. Not bothering to say anything else, he turned around and headed back for his car. He may have lost the battle, but he will not lose the war. Driving away, he gripped the steering wheel tightly, his face set with a grim determination.
“I will find you Elijah. I’ll find you and get you back. That is a promise.”

Elijah sighed in contentment as he stood at the window, staring out at the garden. A garden he had planned on creating and had finally found the time. He placed a gentle hand on his swollen abdomen and smiled happily as another hand fell over it, caressing his pale skin.

“You’re glowing,” a soft voice whispered into his ear, making him want to melt into the floor, the way it always had, from the moment they had met.

“It’s because I’m happy,” Elijah leaned back against the strong chest, feeling safe and warm and loved. “I’ve never been so happy…”

“Neither have I. I’m so glad that I made Sean tell me where to find you,” Dom sighed, his voice soft and light and full of love and forgiveness. “You should have told me the minute you found out, love.”

“I was scared. I didn’t want to fuck things up for you…”
“Fuck what up? Lost is done for me now and everything else doesn’t matter. Only you do. You and our child.”

“I’ll never keep anything from you again,” Elijah turned around in Dom’s arms, wrapping his arms around Dom’s neck, tilting his head back for Dom to claim his lips.

“Good. I love you Elijah. I love our baby and I’ll never allow either of you to be away from me ever again. You can count on it…,” His hands gently cradling Elijah’s belly, Dom leaned over to claim the younger man’s lips….

Elijah gasped as he woke up to the shrill ring of the telephone. He rubbed his eyes as he sat up and blinked against the light from the streetlamp outside. Fuck. It had been a dream. Dom hadn’t been here at all. He was still blissfully unaware of Elijah’s condition and as far as he knew, Sean had kept his promise and hadn’t told anyone, especially Dom.

Sighing, he reached over and picked up the phone, wondering what Sean wanted at this hour. It could only be Sean, since he was the only one that had this number.
“Yeah?”

“Elijah…are you awake? Are you sitting down?” Sean asked, his voice revealing how nervous he was. He had fought with himself for the past hour on whether to tell Elijah that Dom was looking for him or not and finally decided to let his friend know. Maybe just knowing that Dom wanted to talk would bring Elijah to his senses about telling Dom about the baby.

“Now I am. What do you want?”

Sean took a deep breath, preparing himself for anything. He had no idea how Elijah will react. “Dom is back in LA.”

“What?” Elijah blinked, not able to believe what he was hearing. Finally. After two and a half months, Dom was back in the same city he was in. What did that mean? Did it mean anything at all?

“He’s back and…well…he was waiting for me when I got home from dropping you off…”

Fuck! He hadn’t been expecting that part…at least not this soon! What was he going to do? What if Dom was looking for him? What would he say if he found him? Oh fuck…he just couldn’t…he couldn’t deal with Dom right now. He needed more time. “You didn’t tell him did you?”

“Of course not. I told you I wouldn’t…”

“Thank god…” Relief filled Elijah as he sat back against the cushions. He was safe. Dom was safe. He didn’t know. He knew he could trust Sean…

“But Elijah…he’s looking for you…and he knows that I know where you are…he wants to see you…”

“Well he can’t and you can’t tell him Sean! Not ever! You promised!”

“I know and I’m going to keep that promise. I just wish that you’d reconsider, is all. You didn’t see the look in his eyes when I told him to leave you alone. That I wasn’t going to tell him anything…”

“Fuck…Sean…I….I want to…but….it’d ruin his career. You know that….”

“Well maybe he doesn’t deserve the career. I mean…he did knock you up. It shouldn’t be just you taking the responsibility…”

“Don’t, Sean. Don’t blame him, please…this is my fault…I knew my feelings for him and I had let them take control. This is my doing….not his…”

“Elijah, I know you’re to blame too, but…”

“No! No, Dom does deserve the career that’s before him. He deserves it all. And I’m going to make sure that he gets that by staying out of his life and you’re going to help me by keeping your mouth shut.”

“He has a right to know Elijah…please…just…reconsider.”

“No, and that’s the end of it. We won’t discuss this again.”

“Alright. Fine. I’ll be over tomorrow with more groceries for you. You remember what the doctor said…”

“Yes. Plenty of rest and eat plenty of food…just don’t forget my pickles, peanut butter, and chunky monkey ice cream…”

“I won’t,” Sean chuckled.

“And Sean…thank you for everything. This is the best for everyone…you’ll see…”

Sean didn’t say anything. He just hung up, not able to agree that it was the best. In fact, he was absolutely sure it was the worst.

Elijah sighed and closed his eyes, wishing that he could go back to the dream he was having before Sean’s call. The dream of Dominic being with him and the baby. Looking forward to it and planning to be with them forever. It was a beautiful dream. A dream that could never come true, for he knew that if it did…Dom’s career would be ruined and sooner or later, he’d resent them both for it.
“Forgive me, Dom. But you can’t ever know. I love you too much to let you give it all up…”

Drifting off into a dreamless sleep, Elijah knew that what he was doing was the right thing. He was doing what was best for them all. Someday, Sean will see that. He knows he will. He had to.

no more waiting domlijah
