i was working all during the day of absence/presence; so i was unable to make any of the films nor participate in the activities everyone. so here is my response to reading #3 Pastor Dowe at Tacate, from on being foreign...
The Pastor went through a couple huge swoops in his cultural adjustment wave. he even seemed to start downward when he couldn't get across his ideas of God, especially his primary misunderstanding of Metzabok and Hachakyum. this clearly shows the potential of religion to play a part in some hardships of adjusting. in many countries outside the US religion plays a much larger role, and atheism is hard to grasp for some. the Pastor didn't realize the difference in the Gods, which created some problems via communication. communication is key, and whether one knows the native tongue or not, it isn't always as simple as one would hope to spread opinions, views, ideology, let alone religious beliefs.
After going on the path through to the river side to figure things out, coping the feeling of being alone in the region, he seemed to figure himself out and get inspiration. the two natives showed him the way to the holy caves. he put forth a lot of trust to climb into the bamboo boat to shoot downstream. this trust showed his willingness to adapt and become comfortable in Tacate. it worked out for him as well, and his next sermon ended up going much more smoothly, playing music (which some may call a universal language), and with his better understanding of the differences between Metzabok and Hachakyum.
The end of the short story i wasn't expecting at all. his shock wave jolted again and the Pastor found himself right back where he had started. by being presented a young girl for a wife... he could not grasp the concept. his friend Mateo knew about it prior to the fact, and this made the Pastor feel a bit betrayed by not having Mateo tell him what would happen. i like how it ended with the Pastor on the path wondering, thinking to himself "about nothing". the path provided an answer for him earlier in the story, so perhaps it will again.
