in "everthing's nice" the main characters wave of cultural adjustment is an intense one. it was hard for her to distinguish how others were portraying her inside the family's home. the elderly lady shot faces and tones of voice from "firm" to "smilingly". once the main character walked into the house her cultural wave was that of high expectations, positive; but when she struggled through the social atmosphere the curve sloped downward and she was getting nervous with her growing more and more uncomfortable.
her coping of the situation was to escape it. that is one way of coping with a certain situation, but it my opinion it is in relation to denial, which gets one no where. if she was to stay and deal with her cultural barriers she would have came out of which with a better understanding of herself and how she can deal with such a situation. in stead she recognized her unwillingness to try that, and ran from it.
the cultural adjustment wave goes up and down. when its up, things are great strolling through a culture thinking everything is new and exciting, which is an awesome feeling. but one the wave curves downward, one has to dig deep and find ways to cope with the feelings/reasons that are bringing one down.
