I know the feeling that Eli writes about, the judgmental fear of a situation. It seems as though all the negative possibilities jump out in your mind and panic can take place. At the end of the entry, she writes: The trick to travel is learning what fears are founded and unfounded. When traveling in a situation where you are unaware be cautious but do not let fear rule you. It is the same thing with taking the subway from Manhattan to the lower east side of new york at 3 in the morning with simply a backpack on. But that is traveling still, no matter the distance.
Public transportation can be tricky. Especially when the language sounds like jambled words in your ears. But at the same time, it is an adventure and one can panic, have a blast, get robbed, anything can happen and that's life. Public transportation is a crucial gateway into how a society moves together and interacts. It also allows you to figure out things on your own, help find ones way around the region/area. Eli's bit on taxis is great. Wondering about the price, if you are headed in the right direction, trying to explain your situation to the driver. It can be frustrating but in retrospect it is all part of the solo style experience.
