I'll say Sonic, who meets your qualifications of optimism, sense of humor, independence, and outgoingness. Popo also came to mind, but I think he's a little too reliant on his better half.

I was considering several characters, but you do need someone who is a bit cultured... which eliminates a lot of them. I was considering Toon!Link at many points, but Marth fits your or responses and seems to mesh with your own personality very well.

My vote's going for Ness. ^^ You're a very lucky girl~ he's my absolute favourite SSB character. Ever. *squee!*

Yep yep~ he's smart for his age, fairly down-to-earth and knows how to have fun. He's also independent and outgoing, (enough to go off saving the world at least), and has the typical hero-optimism too. <3 It seems like a good balance of your requirements. :3
