If voting is such a privilege, why do you get fined if you don't?
It's almost that time again - stupid campaigns, emotional advertising and an obscene amount of money thrown around from people who seem to have a job doing whatever they want regardless of the outcome. Australia being the free country that it is, also fines you if you fail to vote... so do people vote because they actually give a shit or do they vote just so they don't get fined? ... and how the fuck does a hung parliament occur unless it was a draw!?!?
What about voting for what is important to you? What if you fight for human rights and take issue to the processing time for Asylum seekers? What if you fight for Gay Marriage? You have to vote and probably get to select from whichever group you'd prefer to reject it if no party supported it. Optional voting will stop people having a say over something they dont really give a shit about but have been forced to have a say in it anyway. Damn, I'd totally vote for optional voting...
I doubt anyone has a military force available so we will just have to suck it up. But what if instead of this bullshit we just vote for the policies that mean the most to us. whoever got the most votes on whatever campaign promise it was, then their job is to deliver on it... Where the hell does all the tax and revenue from fines go with debt increasing and nothing really changing? Seriously, has anyone bought alcohol, cigarettes, food or clothes outside of Australia? We are getting financially screwed. If the government needs a project to work on - here's a few things they can get rid off:
Jaywalking - Fined for our "safety" when crossing the road. My question is: I didn't get hit so clearly me looking right then left then right again worked but if I had been hit by a car, would they still have fined me? And whats worse! If it's so fucking dangerous, why did they let me do it?
Speeding - the technology exists to just stop cars going a certain speed. Hiding cameras and getting a fine weeks later hardly stops the dangerous situation when it happened. It's all just bullshit really - good thing my plan of voting for whoever has the best photo might actually get someone who doesn't look like they have a dead chromosome... heres hoping!
