A prison for Shifters

[Surprisingly for very few people actually familiar with Devon, her attitude regarding food rationing and obeying rules in general left her in a holding cell. She'll be there for a while - so if you're concerned about her feeling sad or lonely, by all means come visit ( Read more... )

Strange. I wouldn't expect a woman of your principles to be locked up like this without complaint. Or did I miss that part?

Complaints themselves are nothing but empty whining. If you are unhappy with another person's actions, counter them with deeds. Not words.

Sometimes actions are hard to understand without words to clarify their meaning, though.

And because of that, words were exchanged. White Chalice is a place that values rules and self-proclaimed laws, even if they are meaningless or nonsensical. Which is why I am here.

[Disregarding laws? In front of someone who seeks to protect them? Bad choice.] Laws are in place to be followed. They might seem nonsensical to you, but they're required to put everyone on the same level in the eyes of justice. Would you rather there be total chaos in its place, where thieves and murderers run around free to do as they please?

A society where each individual is noble enough not to turn into a chaotic murderer if given the chance is the one which needs no laws.

This is unrealistic for now. But it is something humanity should struggle to achieve.

Indeed, such a thing is something all of humanity should strive for.

However, it is as you said, it's not realistic in the here and now. Therefore, until such a time comes to pass, you're going to have to deal with the consequences of your actions whether you agree with them or not.

Consequences may always occur, indeed. I do not deprive anyone of their right to exert influence on me.

I will oppose it if it is not to my liking, however.

Now, see, this is not how it works. When I said "whether you agree to them or not", I did not mean "Only if said consequences are to your liking." That isn't how the justice system functions. Thinking that your own importance gives you reason to believe yourself above the law doesn't make you above the law, it just makes you an egotist, even if you can back up your words with actions. In fact, it's those kinds of people back home who cause the most trouble by using Gaia-Memories to become Dopants, in order to further exert that 'importance' onto the rest of the populous. What they're doing, however, is making the rest of the population miserable and causing trouble for everyone. It makes the city cry in pain.

In fact, it is these people who try to exert their importance through force who are the least important people at all in the eyes of everyone else, because the sooner such people are stopped, the sooner they are abandoned by the wayside, their only legacy a tale of misery.

Do not put me in the same category as those who make others' lives full of misery.

[A quick and angry response. Shou obviously struck a nerve.]

['This just keeps getting better. I wonder if I can get this woman's name for Philip to look up?'] There's a problem with that request of yours: I don't have to listen to it. The more you try and force your importance onto others, the more they'll reject you, and the more they'll refuse to listen. Stop forcing the matter, and the respect you so desperately want will come in time. Otherwise, you might as well be another who simply wants to drag people down to their level.

Those who manage to exist outside of society are either beasts or gods. If Dopants use their ability only to cause misery, then they surely belong in the former category.

As for yourself: of course you do not have to follow anything I say. To oppose or reject actions of others is to exercise free will. This is how a human is different from beasts.

Rejection of others does not concern me. Mine is a lonely path by default.

[Seems Devon managed to calm herself, because she's back to the usual monologues again.]

'Outside of society?' No. Even beasts and gods alike are subject to judging from others of society. How else would we know what the criminals are, or who to worship? Just because you are physically or morally 'better' than the rest of humanity doesn't make you above them.

And you're right, I don't have to listen to you, which is an interesting thing to say after telling me straight out that you don't want me to group you among the so-called beasts of society. You can't have it both ways.

Furthermore, I don't believe you for a second: yours isn' a lonely path, certainly not by default; you just keep pushing everyone else off of the path like a mindless animal so you can wallow in your own misery by yourself. It's pathetic, incredibly so.

The only pathetic thing here is my current condition.

It must be interesting to view the world through your jaded eyes, then. It's kind of a pity, really.
