The team boarded a transport flight bound to India, where several strange mechs had been spotted wandering. About 30 minutes out of the city of New Deli, they received an urgent SOS from the city of Kanpur. Quickly changing route, the team arrived in time to witness a clash between a group of mysterious mecha and a bunch of winged creatures who had been fighting in the middle of the city. Kanpur itself remained more or less in ruins.
Major Sanger, who headed the operation, ordered a sortie when the team was in range, and the group fanned out to deal with the threats. Attacking while the enemy was already engaged, they managed to down several of the mechs and creatures before there was a chance to respond.
Taking the initiative, Simon attacked the lead mech, launching both Lagann and the mech into the Ganges river. While his comrades fought through the enemies to come to his aid, he destroyed the other mech's arms and assimilated it. Bursting from the river, the newly-christened Gurren Lagann immediately fell upon the remaining enemies. As the EDF forces fell upon the remaining enemies and Major Sanger unleashed his colossal blade, the enemy was completely wiped out save for one, a man by the name of Maderas, who fled but not before identifying himself to the team.
