I went for a dinner at some clan association on Saturday. I am Hakka by the way, so this is a Hakka clan association. Got seated with a bunch of other students and after the awkwardness reached a certain threshold, we started making small talk.
Although we are all hakka and are the third(at most the fourth) generation since our ancestors took a boat over to Singapore, EVERYONE at my table couldnt speak a word of Hakka. We couldnt identify a single Hakka song they played throughout the dinner. Worst still, my father dont even know which province he came from when asked! And its too late to ask because my grandfather died 50 years ago! So essentially, I will never know my roots.
I cant speak the language my great grandfather used to speak. Who is he I dont even know? Where he comes from I dont know? The only words I can speak is through a song about stars which I memorised when I was young.
So sad!!!! The best way to find our most about myself is through watching 'Ke jia zhi ge". Some mediacorp show starring xie shao guang about Hakka people in china i guess. which is so sad~!!
