I am deeply saddened by the shooting in Norway. Having just returned from a Scandinavian country a few months ago, I am largely aware of how those people are absolutely nice and completely peace-loving. In fact, I knew of these way before the news were out because my swedish friend posted in on his FB but I did not really believe it until I saw it on the news. I cannot articulate how shocked I am because I always thought Norway was a safe haven. But the fact that it happened, and happened within a youth camp, is a timely reminder to all that no where is safe.
I felt so secure in Sweden then, surrounded by the forest and lakes, even more secure when I was in Singapore. But as I look at the pictures of the carnage, the juxtaposition of the bloody scenes with the serene background just highlights that sad fact. No where in the world is safe.
