18. Water
Rahab, for all practical purposes, was safe within the drowning walls of the Abbey. His brothers did not understand him- who would, really?-, and they feared him for this. Why would a vampire willingly habituate to close to water? They didn’t know Rahab's gift.
A cool evening found Raziel at the gates of the Drowned Abbey. The ground was soft beneath his boots, and his footsteps left puddles in the dirt. He let himself in and pulled his cloak even tighter about himself; he didn’t like this place, and he couldn't see why his brother did. Shadows played across the walls in the light of the torches, and he felt eyes following him as he showed himself into Rahab’s sitting area. He carefully selected the least-mildewed couch he could find and he relaxed delicately.
He smelled him before he saw him. Sea salt and chilled skin, worn leather and the sharp tang of blood. Rahab's presence was not as bold as Raziel's; nay, he was subtle. He complimented his surroundings, Raziel mused at his brother’s enigmatic appearance. All sharp lines and soft colors...were those scales? Dark lips bent into a grin as he rose to greet his brother.
"Rahab! You are looking well."
"As are you, brother. What brings you here?"
Direct as ever, my Rahab.
"We have heard so little of you lately. It’s all but impossible to get you out of this pit! I had feared that you had slipped and drowned! I do not understand you, sometimes."
Did he smile? I’m not sure. He eased himself from the stone doorframe and beckoned for me to follow him, and I did.
He led me down dark passages and damp corridors, and the air was turning very humid. As soon as I was thoroughly lost in the labyrinth, we emerged into a flooded courtyard, shimmering with the moon's glow. Even though my boots were near-impenetrable, I stepped back from the water lapping at my heels. Rahab, barefooted and sure, stepped further in. What I expected never came; his toes, his ankles, his knees... He slid off his leather trousers along the way, and he watched them float back to the shore.
Watching me watch him.
"How can you do this?" I ask him, equally suspicious and intrigued. "It is unnatural!"
"Is it?" He drawled, making me feel small as he stepped further into his moonlit pool. I stepped out and felt the splash over my boots, and I had to kneel to feel the water for myself. There was the familiar pain of burning flesh and quickly mending skin, a single trickle of blood from my scalded thumb... and there was Rahab staring down at me.
When did he get this close?
He took my injured hand from me and examined it, careful that he did not touch damp flesh to my own. "A vampire will burn when he touches water. That is nature working against you." His eyes left my hand and met my own. "As you have seen, I have overcome this. I am beyond nature."
He brought my hand to his mouth and lapped up the stray blood, watching me coolly. I leaned back against the damp entryway into the courtyard, watching him watching me. My skin tingled from the humid air, and I shivered when Rahab bit my hand. "My dear brother," he said around the bleeding heel of my palm, "it is blood that drives a vampire. No matter how strong we are, or how divine we become, we can never deny our true nature."
Here he pinned me against the doorway, hip to hip, bare skin to aged leather. He held my hands above me with one of his, and I felt small beneath him. I couldn't have moved if I wanted to. "We are beasts, each and every one of us," he hissed against my throat, "We must fight to distinguish ourselves from animals." He tilted my chin up, angling it to the side so my neck was exposed.
"Dear brother, why do you continue to do this to yourself?" he whispered against me. He didn’t give me a chance to speak before he bit. What was a sting turned into a fire racing over me and through me, and my knees wanted to buckle but Rahab's support alone kept me from falling.
After an eternity, he released me. We were both flushed and breathless, and I'll admit it, I enjoyed seeing him like that. I tugged one hand free of his hold and snaked it behind his neck, pulled him close and kissed the smug bastard until he was shivering as badly as myself. He reached between us and took a hold of himself, stroking himself firm. He broke the kiss and leaned his head into my shoulder, panting into my neck. I stroked his hair and listened to his contented sighs and groans, and I finally took his hand in my own and stopped him.
"To the wall," he told me. "Get rid of the clothes."
And I did, because how do you disobey something like that from someone like him? At a time like this?
I sprawled against the driest stretch of wall I could find, naked for all but my boots, as Rahab followed. Not wasting a moment, he pulled my legs off the ground and wrapped them around his hips, supporting me with his body yet again. Not bothering to prepare me, he pushed his slick cock against me and took me.
This wasn't lovemaking; there was nothing gentle about it. It was Rahab using me for his own pleasure, and I loved it. I was helpless beneath him, a slave to his desire, and addicted to his power. It didn’t take long...it didn’t have to. One thrust after another at his own frantic rhythm, and he forced my head to the side again and he bit me again. The combined feel of his fangs tearing into me and his cock filling me was too much. I screamed when I came, and then I saw darkness.
I awoke naked and alone in a dry patch of the same courtyard, very near to dawn. I was not so vulnerable to Nosgoth's weak sunlight that it would do me great harm, but it was death to the Rahabim. I stumbled to my clothes, exactly where I left them, and dressed quietly.
I don’t know why I visit Rahab. I don’t know why I let him use me like he does. I do know, however, that as his gift develops, I will only ever be more fascinated by him. Perhaps I too should have his abilities someday...
