Dean thought the most frustrating thing ever was dealing with drunk Cas. Since he died he's learned that is far from the truth. The most frustrating thing ever is watching his brother spiral down like this and not being able to do a damn thing about it. It takes concentration and he has to recall some skills that he learned the first time he was a ghost but Dean takes the whiskey bottle Sam's been using as a security blanket and smashes it against a wall.

Well...okay more dramatic than he'd intended but that was sort of what ghosts did, wasn't it? Dramatic.

Dramatic, indeed. Sam has broken a lot of things, most of them in the same way as that bottle, but he's fairly certain he didn't throw that one. Or is he finally just losing his mind? He looks around wildly to see if maybe someone's just messing with him. But there's no one there. Yep, definitely going crazy.

Yeah that wasn't an accident Sam. And ghost!Dean will prove it by shoving Sam toward the couch. The message here is clear if only Sam knew it was his brother. Stop drinking like a fish and sit your ass down.

Of course shoving Sam takes a good bit of concentration and ghosty strength. The shove may not be as hard as Dean intended.

Sam feels the pressure on his chest and stumbles back just a little, confused beyond all reason. He looks behind him to the couch, then down at where he felt something shove him. Like whatever this is wants him to sit down. It's crazy, it's insane, and there's no possible way, but he looks around again.

"...Dean?"

Ah-ha! Baby brother hadn't lost his brain entirely. Now how to confirm it was him. Dean looks around the room. AH-HA! Jeans he'd thrown over one of the chairs and forgotten. With some work he tosses those to the floor.

Got it in one!

Sam's got it together enough to put the clues together, but he's also sane enough to think he's finally lost it. He runs a hand through his hair, still wide eyed and not really sure what to think. Dean's dead, but he's here in the room, but he's not here in the room, so then that means he's a ghost.

Again.

Fuck. Panic sets in. And relief, but mostly panic. He doesn't think to tell Dean to stay wherever he is; he just runs out of the apartment and comes back about twenty minutes later with Dean's absolute favorite thing ever: a Ouija board. He stares at it, feeling a little ridiculous, before looking around and setting the board up on the table.

While Sam is gone, Dean spends his time pacing, popping in and out and trying to find Sam. It's not as easy as it might sound. When Sam shows back up, Dean has only been there for a little while. Great. We're twelve year old girls now

Dutifully he 'sits' opposite Sam with the Ouija board and concentrates to guide the stupid plastic thing around the board:

B-I-T-C-H

What else did you expect Dean to spell out?

Sam watches the word spell out with worry, but once he sees the word, all of his pain and fear and sadness, it just rushes out like a river. He laughs, from amusement and relief, and there are tears coming with it but for the first time, they're not tears of mourning.

"Good to know it's really you, jerk," he laughs just a little bit more, "God, I miss you, Dean." Also, tears. Lots of them. Sam's a bitch, for sure, but he loves his brother just that much.

Sam's tears send Dean into Mama!Bear mode but this time there's not much he can do about it. It drives him crazy. He does what comes instinctively, shoving against his brother's shoulder in what would have been a light punch if he had a body. The pointer on the Ouija board starts moving again:

Always fun, being punched by ghosts, but knowing that it's Dean, Sam understand it's just his way of telling him to get over it. He patiently waits for the message to spell out; Hell, he'd wait a day for it to spell our if he had to. He's just so relieved that Dean is actually here instead of...elsewhere.

Sam nods, then looks up to where he's assuming Dean is sitting across from him. As much as it is a comfort to know he's there, not actually being able to see him or feel him or punch him back is more than just a little perturbing. "So, what? You died and became a ghost? Why didn't you come back to life?"

Yeah it's not ideal. Trust him Sammy. He'd rather be more solid as well.

D-O-N-T K-N-O-W

And then a pause so Sam has a chance to get that.

Sam immediately starts nodding once he figures out the second sentence, "Of course. Just," he swallows, "don't go anywhere..really far away. We'll figure this out."

There's a long pause before Dean starts moving the pointer around the board. He hates this as much as Sam does.

N-O-T G-O-I-N-G A-N-Y-W-H-E-R-E

G-O-N-N-A S-C-R-E-W W-I-T-H J-O A-N-D C-A-S

Because really. Now that he knows Sam's going to take care of it would he really miss this chance to mess with people?

The first sentence is both literally and figuratively a breath of relief. Sam starts to smile, when he realizes that the pointer is being moved again. A second sentence? He watches curiously, mentally writing down each letter to try and form coherent words, and by the end, his shoulders are sagging a little and he looks up to where Dean should be with disapproval.

"Dude, seriously? We all miss you like crazy. Give them a chance to recover before you go Amityville on them."

There is another long pause because it never occurred to Dean that Cas or Jo would be particularly upset about his disappearing. Finally he goes to move the indicator again.

Sam lowers his head a little. They're a helluva lot better than he is, but that's still not saying much. "Cas has been...gone, for most of it. He kinda took off right after you..." No. No finishing that sentence. He's trying to keep his shit together. He inhales a little, then continues, "Jo spent a lot of time drunk. I think we all did, except for maybe Anna. She's been...well, I don't really know what she's been." He looks back up at him, a small frown on his face. "But she misses you too. We all do."
