Some Things Never Change (Epilogue)

Reid rolled over, lying flat on his back with a sheet draped lazily over the bottom half of his body. Almost instantly a groan escaped his lips, his arm flying up to cover his eyes from the sunlight streaming in through the open blinds. He wasn't used to the sun being out when he woke up most days, and he was a stickler for keeping the blinds shut until all occupants were awake. Luke, however, never seemed to want to follow that little rule. With a sigh, Reid rolled back over and let his legs hang over the side of the bed, slowly pulling himself up into a sitting position.

"Luke!" he called out loudly, rubbing his tired eyes with his calloused fingers. No reply. "Luke?"

There was still no answer. Releasing another dramatic groan, Reid stood up and walked straight to his dresser, digging out a pair of Harvard sweat pants and pulling them on over his boxer, opting to wander shirtless through the warm house. It was the middle of June and the summer was already turning out to be unusually warm for the Midwest. The hum of room fans buzzed throughout the house and a medley of soft rock songs were playing on the radio in the kitchen. Amongst all the noise, though, Reid couldn't detect any of the sounds he associated with Luke's presence.

Turning off the hallway into the kitchen, Reid called for Luke one more time but was met with the same silent response.

The music on the radio stopped for a beat, the morning host suddenly speaking in a tone far too cheery for Reid’s liking and thanking the listeners for turning it. ”It’s gonna get up into the 80s on this beautiful June 8th, 2012 day,” the man said happily. Regardless of spending years in Dallas, Reid still wasn’t a fan of the heat. He turned off the radio with a triumphant, ‘Hmmpf’. Instinct drew him toward the fridge in search of something to drink, feet dragging slowly across the cool floor. He pulled open the white door and let his eyes fall over the contents of the fridge, finally drawing out the half-gallon of 1% milk, twisting off the cap and drinking straight from the carton - something he knew he could only get away with when Luke wasn't around. He replaced the cap and stuck the milk back into the side door, knocking it closed with his knee. Just as he turned to now raid the cabinets, he noticed the bright yellow addition to the fridge; a note from Luke.

Shortly after they had moved into their new, shared place, Luke had attached a small cork board to the back of the fridge. It was littered with pictures of them, together and separate, as well as their closest friends. For the moment, pictures of them from their beach trip in late April claimed the spot of honor, with some of Luke's favorites taped to the side. The images changed every few weeks as new events took place and new memories were made, and though Reid had complained non-stop about the 'obnoxious scrapbook' on the back of his 'food locker', he'd eventually gotten used to it. With a small grin, Reid relaxed and reached for the pinned up note.

"Good morning, hubby. Gotta run, early meeting. Don't forget our date tonight. Luv ya! xxx PS, Stop rolling your eyes."

The note earned a laugh from Reid as he twisted the ring on his finger out of habit. He re-pinned the note to the board with a smile, shaking his head and of course rolling his eyes.

The sun was high in the sky when Luke finally made it home, undoing the buttons on his dress shirt as he walked up the drive. He wasn't surprised to see Reid's car was gone. Reid had told him he'd probably be over at Katie's for part of the afternoon before they went out, which was fine with him. As much as Luke adored having Reid around full-time, he enjoyed the few moments he had to himself, too.

He took his time showering and cleaned a little before retreating to the kitchen for a quick lunch. His first stop, though, was the fridge, smiling with anticipation. He'd left a note for Reid that morning, and though it had taken a bit of 'training' on his part, Reid was finally leaving him messages in return.

Just as he'd expected, he found a small white piece of lined paper tacked up beside his own, Reid's handwriting scrawled across.

"You know Snyder, you are such a sap... And as if you'd let me forget - just as long as you don't forget your promise that it would be worth my while ;) And I am not rolling eyes... Okay, maybe a little. xxx."

Laughing loudly, Luke could only describe how he felt as 'giddy'. Reid still wasn't Mr. Romance by any means, but he did give it some effort and he seemed to not only tolerate but actually enjoy and appreciate the 'sappy' side of Luke.

He thought about their upcoming date and smiled, reflecting on how far they had come in only a few short years: From hating each other, to now sharing a home and a life. As he glanced back at the notes they were using to communicate, full of the teasing and flirty taunting they were known for, he couldn't help but laugh again. Some things never change.
