Goodbye Blue LJ

Nov 16, 2009 14:57

I have about 25 people on my friends-list here on LJ. Only one of them posts more than once a month. In fact, the last 20 or so posts on my friends-list are all by the same person. I've long since felt like those who read LJ posts without themselves creating posts are free-riding -- but I figured this is ok as long as people read what I write and respond now and then. But it seems that people are no longer responding either. The last seven posts I've made consists of two excerpts from Wikipedia articles, one comic, one post about Sci-Fi writers, one movie trailer, one article about the death of Judge Justice, one post about a reference to the Klingon language in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and one post containing song lyrics by Neko Case. And not a single person has responded to any of these. Since I feel like I'm casting messages in bottles out to sea here, I'm going to stop using LJ.

However, I'm going to continue posting long-ish pieces using the 'notes' function on Facebook. The notes function allows me to generate posts that are viewable to the general public, or to people on my friends-list only, or even only to particular individuals I select from my friends-list. If you wish, you can 'subscribe' to these notes, in which case you'll be alerted whenever I write one viewable by you.

In any case, after five years and nine months, I'm done posting on LJ. At the peak, I was posting literally once a day, for weeks on end. The first sentence I ever posted on LJ was in February of 2004. It read: "I never thought I'd do one of these journal things, but if Dvorak does it, then, as a rule, its fine by me."
