Sooooooo.  For those following along on Facebook, you know I got sick in Antwerp.  It was bad.  I had the shits, I was afraid the tapwater might be contributing to the problem, and everything is closed on Sunday so I couldn't buy more bottled once I drank through what was in my room.  I have never been so sick that Imodium didn't slow things down ( Read more... )

I don't know about the travel. I'm actually ready to cut back a little bit, I think. It's been really frustrating because I've flown a lot, but thanks to O's policies I haven't actually accrued miles for some of the trips, so I'm not eligible for upgrades and stuff. I end up paying about $400 out of pocket every time I go anywhere outside the U.S. to upgrade to economy plus. Bob's quitting one of his jobs to go to school full time starting in January, so we're doing some belt tightening.

But then, the new boss has this giant spreadsheet of cons that he wants us to start covering, and adding this new project will present different opportunities, outside of Java and the open source world. Like SXSW, different cloud and social media stuff. So I don't know what I'm going to do. If I end up in Europe a little more often that would put me into upgrade territory on the miles - it's all the stuff I do on wonky local airlines (Aeroflot! Royal Air Maroc! JetAir! [India's answer to Southwest, I think]) that screws me on the miles, and India. O's travel agency has some deal where they get better rates on the flights, but I don't get the miles, so three of the four SFO <-> Singapore legs I've done on Singapore Air, I got no miles for.

Which reminds me - I did the whole three weeks in Morocco and Belgium in a Samsonite rolling carryon and a Tom Bihn backpack. You asked me once about doing a writeup of my packing list for doing long/business trips all carryon. Still interested?
