Thank you gift for nerilka24

May 13, 2008 00:52

A while ago, I promised nerilka24 some icons in exchange for her godsend help. She was an angel, saying she was happy to help out, but I insisted, and she requested "Justin with S3 hair of love, with or without Brian". I know I'm a bit a lot late, but life's a bitch sometimes and my inspiration is being drained by college obligations ( Read more... )

icons, thanks

You have no idea how the american media reacted when the show aired. Seriously, the US is still a very conservative and bigoted country, specially with that Bush in the Government, and although the show aired in a private network, the word rapidly spread throughout the country.

Things are slowing changing, specially with ABC shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters (which are trying portrait a more real image of the country), but back when the show aired, in 2000, it was pretty much a shock, specially since they wanted it to be different, they wanted to cause a commotion, like "We're here, we're queer, deal with it." After that auspicious beginning, things sort of "settled down" and the show started to be less confrontational.

The story arcs where they fight for their rights are very well written and focus on many different subjects, like justice and gay marriage, to name a few.

I don't think any Portuguese network would have the balls to air QaF US. Then again, I didn't believe they would ever air QaF UK and RTP2 did, so I may be mistaken. RTP2 is probably the only network who would be brave enough to bet on a show as confrontational to one's beliefs and as daring as QaF US. But the Portuguese people would probably find it immoral, lol. Then again, everyone loves Dexter. We'll just have to wait and see!

Well I agree with you. But, for example, SIC aired the portuguese version of Queer ye for the straight guy and it wasn't weel received both by critics and audiences...So the idea of buying queer as folk could be a mistake, specially ragrding tv ratings which matter soooo much.

Dexter....well, to be honest everyone was expecting a bit more from this series...However it isn't the top rated series on rtp2...people prefer Friends reruns and Bones...I jst don't understand how rtp2 airs L Word at midnight and QAF UK at 2 in the morning or one in the morning...LOL

Ratings are indeed very important, but they don't actually give tv shows a change. If they fail to catch the people's eye one week, the next week they air very very late. It happens with many tv series, which a shame.

I'm not very familiar with tv share and audience since I hardly watch it, but I mentioned Dexter because many people talk about it and like it. I don't know when you watched QaF UK on RTP2, but the first time it aired, when I watched it in 2005, they aired it at 23pm, which isn't so bad for a series whose content needs parental agreement. But any later than that is a waste of good shows, which happens frequently in Portuguese networks. In the US, the shows air at 8 or 9pm (two or three shows a night). Basically, when they air soap operas here. Shows what kind of media culture we have.

I've done a presentation last year about the portuguese television and since then I've been interested in that sort of things like ratings and stuff.

The tv shows which have already been aired in Portugal are not representative of what people like to watch... Soap operas rule as we know and what impresses me is how CSI brings in a lot of viewers at, let's just say, 2a.m. LOL
When I saw QAF on rtp2 I remember that I was coming home from "the night" lol at around 1.30 ou 2 and it was being shown...I don't know if it was a rerun or not... The thing is: I haven't watched QAFUS but I believe that it is much more controvertial than Dexter...and to be honest, that red circle on the top of the tv...it doesn't make any sense!!!It's like when Herman SIC aired before 10.30...a shame lol.

True, QaF US is much more controversial than Dexter. The only thing on Dexter that is hard t stomach is all that blood. But the story is phenomenal and I love the main actor / character.

The red circle you're talking about is when they air Dexter, right? (QaF certainly needs one of those, lol). From a certain time of the night, I don't know if it's 11pm or something, I don't think they actually have to put it there, but even if they do, Dexter is pretty tamed compared to some movies they air much earlier (like when they aired Fatal Instinct at 23pm on Christmas eve).
