Grrrrrr!

The last couple weeks have been very good for Teeka and I.

I'm very lucky to have the parents I do, who despite what I might think of them sometimes are very quick to forgive, and quick to admit fault when they believe they are at it. I love you, Mom and Dad!

Teeka has... gotten me addicted to the world of Second Life. It's very cool, very fun ( Read more... )

I was considering trying this game out, but the free trial period is over. I am curious about what the TF possibilities are, with the "infinitely customizable avatar"? But from what I read on their site, there just doesn't seem much point to it.

I've been in Second Life since 2003. (As Jim Lupis)

I've seen (and worn) a number of different avatars, ranging from the bog standard human, to Bender from futurama (it was quite porimative, I imagine someone might be able to do better by now) to the current generation of furry avatars by Luskwood Creatures to just about everything else.

Right now I'm in it for the socialization aspect more then anything. I don't have the time (or the real life money) to get land and start building again, and I never was a decent coder by any standard.

I've also seen the game evolve from something that was pretty crude to something that can blow your socks off with a decent computer and a fast network connection.

You're exactly right. And I've seen some of those limitations myself; Still there are pretty creative people in SL who've come up with some interesting ways to get around some of the problems.

Would love to get an animated tail, at some point, eh...

Funny thing is, I once intentionally dumbed down one of my own passwords in case I ever had to ask anyone else to enter it for me. I had a PDA password-protected with a French word that contained an accented letter; easy to enter if one knew how, but I realised that if I ever needed to explain the procedure to somebody else (needed info but left the PDA at home, etc.) it just wasn't gonna happen, especially if I ended up having to ask someone who referred to '#' as the 'tic-tac-toe thingy'.

(It's actually an octothorpe.)

Does 'the pound sign' count? That's what the automatic telephone voice-people call it. :/

Well, her password was certainly dumbed down, that's for sure.

It just irks me that it never occurs to this type of person that calling a sick coworker about something so piddly as "I can't log in," especially when it isn't preventing you from getting your work done is, well, very rude.

...

You know, come to think of it, I think she refers to the caret as "the little hat."

Ah, the descriptions people give... at least they're usually descriptive. "The two dots," "the squiggly line," "the star" (not too far off, actually), "curly braces" (redundant), "the pretzel thingy", etc. Of course, it can also be in fun; one housemate of mine refers to the section marker '§' as "spiral galaxy".

That reminds me of a story a friend of mine once told over breakfast, about how he worked technical support for a company that used software designed by aliens or the like. In true modern style, there were no text labels on the buttons nor descriptive pop-ups; he once had to describe a button to a customer as, "The blue shrivel." 'Shrivel' isn't even a noun, but apparently the description worked perfectly because there was no other icon ever, anywhere, that looked like it. "The blue shrivel," thus, has become part of local argot for any icon that's too much of a mess to really function as an icon.

Yeah....

And when I got into work this morning, she told me that after waiting a half hour and trying again, she was able to log in just fine.
