Alright, I’ve made it pretty clear that Beethoven is one of my musical Gods. But, also in Syd’s musical pantheon, pretty high up, not quite King but maybe his righthand advisor, is Charles Ives. Charles Ives did not write… conventional music. He was a businessman in trade, and didn’t really use his music as his main monetary support. But, he was a genius. His music is often tonally jarring, and rhythmically… well, I’m going to have to use jarring again. Some of his pieces make me laugh hysterically - particularly “Variations on America”. Others make me confused, or excited, or… I’m particularly fond of his 1911 “Waltz-Rondo”, which is just brilliant.
But anyway, Charles Ives. You should all go check him out, even if you don’t like classical music - his is very interesting and special.
