Went up to Boston this weekend: bingsding is in college!!!

The welcome they had for her there was pretty amazing. There was a lane on the street that was coned off leading to the entrance of the building which we pulled into, and there were about a dozen move-in volunteers dressed in green on the sidewalk. As soon as we stopped the car, one of the volunteers came and asked who the new student was, and what her name was, then reported to the others, "Hey, everybody! Laura's here!" The response: "Yaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy!!!!" (We also heard the same treatment being given to the kid in the car behind us, of course.)

Then, a couple of volunteers came to the car and started unloading everything into rollermajiggers, and carted it all up to the elevator. As we were following them down the hallway, there were more volunteers hanging out, shouting things like "She's so cute!" and "I love her already!" The presence of all the volunteers definitely smoothed the move-in process, and the fact that they gave suggested move-in times to everyone alphabetically by last name to distribute the arrival of students over the course of the day was a huge help as well. I was quite impressed by their efficiency. This is the way college move-ins should be handled.

So, now she has a place to stay for the week for her ExplOrientation, which is the best name for an orientation. Evar. Once her actual place of residence for the year is ready, she will be relocated.

After lunch with the family at a vegetarian buffet in Chinatown, I walked over to tEp to hang out with jsoltren. It's rush time, so there were lots of cool activities at tEp. I witnessed the making of ice cream with liquid nitrogen, a demonstration of a binary-counting array of glowing pickles, the new, improved lightshow in room 23, and a bunch of kids watching "Rejected" for the first time. I love watching people's initial reactions to "Rejected." Anyway, we installed the tires I brought up, and conspired, as always is done.

Jo-stok was going to come into Boston to hang out, but couldn't make it. :(

Today was pretty uneventful, except for visiting my cousin (technically, my cousin's son) David in the hospital. His appendix blew up. It's kind of nasty. They have him on antibiotics for now until the infected junk in his gut is clear enough for them to remove the 'dix.

Plans for the week: workin workin, hopefully can get someone to cover for me on Friday so I can go back up to Boston for the second move, Century on Sunday. The plan is to make a stop at Roy's during the Century so that I can meet Signor Mondonico. In order to avoid doing this absurdly early, I will choose the shortest route that passes through Sheepshead Bay (the shorter routes start later) and start riding on the late end of that. I'll give my bib to robarchangel or someone so that it can be redeemed for my T-Shirt at the finish (I did pay for the registration after all, might as well get the dumb shirt), since I might end up spending a long time at the bike shop and probably won't be able to make it by finish time. w00t, I'm so excited about Mondonico, the man and the bike.

bikes, fambly, happenings
