2. Blues for the Muse - The Incredible String Band
3. Big Blue Above - Kavisha Mazella
4. Blind Willie McTell - The Band (though written by Bob Dylan)
5. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
1. Bird on a Wire - Monsiuer Camembert
This is a recently discovered song (or rather version of) for me. I've loved Monsieur Camembert, a fantastic Aussie band who do Gypsy-yiddish-swing generally, but who for one of their double-albums, from a bunch of live-shows, put together a whole bunch of Leonard Cohen songs, some of which show other sides of their music. This one is a favourite, though their version of Hallelujah on it has become my all time favourite version of that song EVER. Seriously, they give it BALLS and SASS, while at the same time being so hauntingly beautiful it has made me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAVE LISTENED TO IT!!! and Luny Chyld too, when I made her listen to it. They make it REAL, if that makes sense. Like suddenly it applies to relationships you've really had, and they were fucked, but beautiful, and... yeah. But I was talking about THIS song! Which is similar, actually, beautiful but with balls and sass :D GO OUT AND LISTEN TO IT! Burn my cd of them! Whatever, just... you should listen to Monsieur Camembert. They are MADE OF AWESOME!
2. Blues for the Muse - The Incredible String Band.
I <3 this band!!!! They are a little-known folk band from the 70's, who took a bunch of acid and starting writing amazing fusion (not the wussy kind) stuff that somehow managed to take the BEST from every style they sampled, rather than the worst or blandest. And then make something even better out of it!
They are a musicians band, as in they have a cult following made up mainly of musicians who can't get over how incredibly amazing they are. They are. Seriously. I only know of them because my dad is one of that cult following of musicians.
They are incredibly talented, as musicians on a million different instruments, and as singers. The control they have over their voices still dumbfounds me. I can't believe what they can do with them. Or the harmonies they come up with!
This particular song is a lovely little Blues about how awesome playing music is... and how sucky it is when you have musicians-block... it's cute and bouncy and you can't help bouncing up and down and grooving when they play it :)
Even if my favourite song of theirs is probably Little Cloud, this one is up there...
3. Big Blue Above - Kavisha Mazella
Another Aussie performer. Some of you may know of her because Sea Change used some of her songs, including this one, but other than that she's another cult one :D
I've seen her live several times, met her, and done a singing workshop with her. Her daughter has a dragon picture that I drew for her at said workshop :D
She's amazing. I won't even try to describe her music. She's of a very mixed heritage and brings all of that to her music. This is one of my favourite songs of hers, period. It is beautiful, and when I saw her live she told us that, though it could obviously be read metaphorically as about a certain type of relationship, this song actually WAS about a fish who falls in love with a fisherman :D SO AWESOME!!!
It always strikes me as very fairytale-ish, I can imagine how it would go... maybe I should write it some day!
Again, everyone should here this woman. She has a beautiful voice and writes wonderfully.
4. Blind Willie McTell - The Band
Because I couldn't have a list like this WITHOUT a Band song in it :D
Because I love The Band. I loves them SOOO MUCH! It's a family obsession. We're ALL obsessed with them. Another one of those cult-following (bigger than the Incredible String Band though) muso's band. This one is a great little number. Has some of their signature, quirky, back-woods-angels harmonies, and interesting and fascinating musical influences.
Just listen to it. I can't begin to describe why I love them...
5. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath.
Cause it is a cool song. Iron Man is even more awesome, but I do like this one. A bit occult, heavy but melodic, I loves it :D
The sort of thing that looks odd in my collection next to my other stuff, but I truly do love them... :D
