Last night, I watched Super-Size Me for the third time. If you’ve not seen it, you can watch it free here - even if you’ve never before seen a documentary and will never again watch one, you need to see this film. Released in 2004, it follows a healthy, happy young-adultish guy with a vegan chef for a girlfriend as he decides to eat nothing but McDonald’s for thirty days, all the while weaving in the history of the U.S. food industry and documenting the country’s obesity epidemic. Morgan Spurlock does a nice, if rather irreverent job of holding up the mirror to show that while we don’t necessarily know the Pledge of Allegiance, we can all sing the “Big Mac” jingle. I find the segment on school lunches to be especially enlightening.

Makes you wonder, though… why does soda exist? I need to look into this… I know Coca-Cola originally had “medicinal” purposes, but as for the now? Chock full of sugar, sodium, and caffeine with absolutely, positively no nutritional value, it is the touchstone by which we judge all other junk food - the epitome of the phrase “empty calories”. I mean, c’mon… even Little Debbies have a little fiber and a little protein. A definite ‘ewah’... though hollylime made me realize the other day how much I miss 7-Up Gold.

Last, but definitely not least… happy birthday, zorb ! Hope you get everything you wish for!! :)
