I am totally one of those people who associates certain songs with certain people and/or situations in my life. Often this is a good thing, because a song can remind me of a happy time. Sometimes, not so much- artists' entire catalogues can be (temporarily) ruined for me by a bad association.
In honor of this weekend's concert I added Mason Jennings and Zach Gill to one of my Pandora stations, and in addition to getting their songs I'm now getting a bunch of Ben Harper. I can't hear "Burn One Down" without thinking of Scott, ever. I totally picture him sitting on the floor in his room, playing along on his drum. Usually stoned. Ah, those were the days.
Pandora is also throwing a bunch of Coldplay at me today. If I added in Nick Drake also I could relive my weekend in its entirety.
When I hear these songs, this is where I go in my head:
"Black" by Pearl Jam: I'm lying in the bottom bunk next to Dave, in the room he shared with Nelson at Kings Point. It was the first time I'd snuck in and spent the night there.
"Don't Push" by Sublime: Adam and I are on the bus going to spring formal junior year. We have a bottle of white wine in a paper bag, and we're trying to finish it and see how many songs from 40 oz. to Freedom we can sing, in sequence, before the ride is over.
"Mercedes-Benz" by Janis Joplin: I'm sitting out on the summit of Mt. Greylock with whoever I was working the dinner shift with that evening, and we've taken a break from cleanup to sing to the sunset. (Related to that- the entire "When I Woke" album from Rusted Root makes me feel like I should be cleaning the kitchen.)
"So Long" by Guster: I'm in the car with Tiff, and we're on the way to the McDonald's in Columbia, NJ for a QP with cheese fix. She's trying to sing along and says, "Guess you knew from the mold on the bread." Ha.
"The Reason" by Hoobastank (a song I just hate, by the by, but not because of this association): Tom and I are in the car and it comes on the radio, and he starts singing along with his own lyrics- "I'm not a perfect peeeerrrsooonnn, I got a 73 on my math tessssttt..."
Ah well...time to stop being such a posting whore, get back to work, and see what other musical surprises the afternoon holds. Oh, the excitement.
