A Conversation with Dad

May 15, 2008 14:43

Last weekend, on Mothers' Day, Joe and I took our parents and our Grandma out to lunch. My Dad and I drove over to Grandma's together to pick her up, and on the way we were talking about some drama going on with some other family members. At some point in the conversation, my father asked me what I thought about it. This may not seem like that big a deal, but...he never asks me that kind of stuff. Most of our conversations consist of me jabbering on and on about something and him listening, nodding occasionally, and every once in a while putting in his two cents. To have him actually ask me, "So what did you think about that when it happened?" made me feel like we were really talking. Like grown-ups, even. So I had to record that for posterity.

And in other conversations, Liz and I had this one today online, regarding wedding gifts:

Me: I mean, to me, if you get something, even if it's from the registry and they "know" what it costs
it's way less obvious than cash or a giftcard- you know what I mean?

Liz: yeah exactly

Me: I feel like when it's a "real" gift, people are less attentive to its cost...either that or all of you married people have figured out that I'm a cheapskate.

Liz: Hahah no! I actually use your champaigne chiller you gave us a a wastebasket in the bathroom b/c it was the only thing that fit! I love it!

Me: HAHAHA, that is AWESOME

Liz: now it looks like i have a relly fancy wastebasket!

Me: That's excellent
