Winter.
That's all Arthur clearly remembered. Snow, cold, wind. The idyllic scenery which, looking back, was probably sent by higher forces to accompany his suffering. As if the blood in his veins didn't stop running by itself, it crystallised as an icy reminder of frozen oxygen he desperately needed.
Merlin.
Because that's what he was, ice cold necessity for the ember that was Arthur. Everything Arthur needed, wanted, had. At east that's how it seemed, until the night when he realised he had never actually had Merlin - Merlin had him. Had him, wanted him, but didn't need him. It wasn't a shock to the prince - a shock would imply acknowledging facts. Merlin not needing him, that was a slowly-approaching river of taunting truth, that kept settling itself in Arthur's mind for a long time, drop by drop, before shattering down like a slowly freezing waterfall.
And then they had a fight, the turning point. "You're here because of me. You need me. You can't leave.", Arthur had said.
Merlin had smiled a broken smile.
"Think twice, Arthur. You're the one who needs. I'm the needed one. And besides, why would I need you? To make me happy? You make me miserable. To make me feel honoured? You're a prat. There's no reason for me to need you. Not any more."
And with that he walked away, leaving his destiny, his Arthur, petrified in the midst of a snowy landscape.
The only thing Arthur saw was a cold, pale beauty, melting along with snow in the warm December sun.
