I saw a cat get hit by a car once. I was on my way home from Denny's, and the car ahead of me ran a red light right before my house, and hit a little black cat. I pulled over immediately to see if it was okay, and discovered that it was MY little black cat- Spooky. I pet her for about a minute and it calmed her down a lot before she died.
It was horrible.
I wish I'd gotten the license number of the bastard who killed my cat. But at least I was there and I managed to make her last moments a little more peaceful. It was better than finding her dead and alone in the morning.

Ugh. I'm just on the edge of crying, here. If I weren't in public, I would be crying, no doubt. I'm so, so sorry you had to go through that, and Spooky too. Ugh.

Here's the thing- There was literally less than a minute between the time that Spooky was hit and when she died. It was extremely sad, but I was glad it was over so quickly.
Chances are, this kitty died quickly without a great deal of suffering. And that should be a great comfort, not just to you but to the cat as well.
Everything and everyone dies, and it's a blessing to be missed and cared for once you're gone. You're honoring this cat with your grief, but don't feel too badly. The orange cat has gone where nothing can hurt it ever again, and if there's a cat heaven I'm sure it's grateful to you for the love you're showing it now.

I know all of that, and I thank you for saying it...it doesn't hurt to be reminded that love and grief are healthy, sometimes.
But what haunts me is the what-if...the what if he was not mortally hurt, and by not stopping, I've left him to suffer? *sigh* And I'll never know. I'll get over it...past it...whatever. But right now, it's hard not to think about it.
